Are the Serial # and the EIN # the only numbers located on the pad of the engine block? This is a BB C2 car. Would I find identification #'s (serial # and EIN anywhere else on the car or is the engine pad the only place to find the engine #?

Re: Engine Identification #'s
Engine code is on the engine pad, and the Protecto-plate if available (and original) The VIN is stamped on the frame drivers side on the top of the rear section just after the point where the frame "kickup" is. A post a week ago had an extensive discussion with some pictures of the frame stamp location if you check the archives.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: Engine Identification #'s
Dotting the 'i' and crossing the 't', technically the VIN number only exists in one place on the car (the VIN plate). In other places (engine stamp pad, frame, tranny), there's a VIN derative sequence stamped. That's a SUBSET of the full VIN sequence...- Top

Re: Engine Identification #'s
Jack is right on ! Here is an example for a 1972. vin # 1z37k2s503187. the engine pad and transmission #'s 12s503187. If one were to delete 2nd,3rd,4th,and 5th digit from vin # that would be correct engine and transmission #'s on this car.- Top

Re: Engine Identification #'s
Bill,
So does that mean that the only place (other than the engine pad) where I could find the engine identification number on a C2 ('67) would be on the Protecto-Plate or is there some derivitive of it somewhere else (as noted on one of the other responses)?
Thanks Bill,
Bob- Top

Re: Engine Identification #'s
Engine ID is not a part of the VIN in '67, so the other answers in this thread (as I read it at least) do not really pertain to your engine question. There are other clues, but unless you have the tank sticker (which are being reproduced) or an ORIGINAL protecto plate (reproductions are available) or the original engine in the car, the exact engine definition is an unknown that can be inferred by close examination of the car, but any of the "tells" can be created during a restoration. VIN references are in several locations, but as noted, the '67 ViN does not include an engine identifier.Bill Clupper #618- Top
