3782461 Cylinder head ID question for late 63

3782461 Cylinder head ID question for late 63

I am in the process of doing a valve job. Both heads are the 461X variety. One is cast E173 and the other is E203. On the E203 cast head just over the casting number 3782461 is another cast number 64. The other head does not have this. Could the 64 signify the combustion chamber being 64cc? I remember I couple of March cast 461 heads I had both had the 64 around the 3782461. Can anyone enlighten me on what the 64 means? Thanks in advance.

Most likely, the "64" represents a pattern number. There were lots of these heads being manufactured at that time and there were lots of patterns (patterns are what the sand molds are made from). The thing that's unusual is that you have one head without a pattern number. There should be one on it somewhere, even if it's not in the same location as the head with the "64".

      Joe,

I looked over the other head very closely and did not find any other casting numbers for a 64 or any other number. I guess in the game of mass production there are always variations and anomalies.
