    Asphalt based chassis paint....

Everyone is sold out of ASPHALT BASED CHASSIS PAINT! Quanta is one of the major suppliers and they estimating a 60 delay before another batch is delivered to retailers.

Does anyone have a stash or know of a stash that I can purchase? I only need a 1/2 quart but would be happy to purchase more.

    Thanks,

    DP

      Hi Dennis
Hopefuly, someone can post what this really is.
Flamable with harmful vapors...must be good stuff!
The add is a bit mis-leading. They did not include the Corvette as one of the vehicle uses.
The application is not accurate as the parts listed, firewall and frame in production were not the same paint (asphaltic).

you are correct about the ad applications. May not be acurate.

I used this product awhile ago when restoring my chassis. I bought it from one of the best corvette restorers in NJ. What he used and bought by the case. Asphalt based with the same part number. Can had a different label back then, and I suppose the ingredients may have changed as well.

          Dennis,

The GM paint you show in your link is not, and I don't believe ever has been, the asphaltic based paint used on frames. To the best of my knowledge, the asphaltic frame paint has never been available through GM. I believe the 1050104 is some type of enamel paint.

The seller is not entirely correct in his description, either. The paint shown is a semi-gloss as used on many brackets, pulleys, etc. It is really too glossy for firewalls and engine compartments.

Trying to find my post from years ago regarding this. The old memory isn't what it used to be. I do remember that 1050104 was like mud in the can. Assumed asphalt base. Stand corrected. I did like the finish and durability.

That's correct. The GM #1050104 is not the material used on various chassis parts like the frame (at least through 1969), steering linkage, etc. The 1050104 is a PAINT. The asphaltic material used on the described chassis components was NOT a paint; it was a COATING. It dried by simple evaporation of the solvent and could be "redissolved" and "liquified" with various organic solvents. As you mention, the asphaltic coating was never available in SERVICE from GM. They probably figured no one would want it.
