    C2 differential

67 327/350 4 speed with the G81CA option ( positraction-3.36). Went to back the car out of the garage and found that the right rear wheel was locked up. Put the car in 1st and it seemed O.K.; tried reverse again and the right rear of the car raised up. Caliper is not actuated (actually removed it and tried reverse again with no change), backed off the parking brake to be sure it was not the problem (it wasn't). Jacked up the rear but could not turn the wheel. What next? Appreciate any help. Thanks

    Re: C2 differential

Try a search of the archives, there was a discussion on this awhile back. I forget what the problem was, I think it was in the e-brake assy, but an archive search should turn it up.

You know William, I've tried using the archives like you suggested but maybe I'm not getting the gist of it?! When trying to search for a recent topic only discovered the most recent article I could source was February of '08 and back . What's the secret here.........how does one search for an article say......July of '08?

Would not be a common rear end symptom, but is definitely a common hand brake symptom. Its frozen up.

          Howard,

I had a similar experience with a wheel bearing failure not too long ago.

          https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...nment&uid=9251

I first thought it was the parking brake hanging up, and heard a clanking/grinding noise when moving forward. Played around with the parking break, on and off, and the noise went away. Then all of a sudden, the left rear wheel locked up on the road.

Hopefully yours is just the parking brake. Try loosening the parking brake cable, and turning the adjusting star nut within the rotor/spindle assembly, to brake the parking brake drum loose.

Also check if you can move the rotor/spindle from side to side. If there is excessive play, it is probably a wheel bearing.

If after you get the wheel to rotate and you hear a clanking/grinding sound, stop, get it into a shop or the garage. You have a pretty major job with the wheel bearing replacement.

In the thread noted above, I wound up replacing both trailing arm assemblies.

            Howard,

Most likely you have a seized bearing and sounds like a lot of damage when that happens. You need the help of Bair's, Ikerd's or any other professional builder.

Whatever you do, don't drive that puppy anywhere. NOT a foot unless you want to repair a lot of fiberglass damage. Put it on a jack and roll it carefully.

              Re: C2 differential

Could be rear bearings, diff,PB shoes, or bad rubber line holding the caliper clamped. sounds like you ruled out the hose as the wheel moves and PB shoes so look at the diff.

You want to be sure about the diff or rear bearings. Jack up the car and pull the 1/2 shaft or disconnect it so that the outer axle( spindle) can turn by hand- it should, if not then look at the parking brake shoes again for broken spring that may cause them to move around and jam. If your bearings were/are that bad you'll feel then as they rotate them.

If it's ok then you'll have to pull the diff. The stock posi setup uses 4 springs and plates to support the posi action. Turning one wheel should turn the other in the same direction. Some things inside could be a sheared off RG bolt or broken spider.

As stated find the problem before you attempt to drive it. Differential parts are costly.

If you have any question you can contact me.

Here's a link to some threads I wrote on diff's with pictures to help you.
