Mark, Here's a picture of my 1960 manifold, cast B 10. Looks the same as yours to me.

I just looked at the manifold from a 59 Fuelie and it also had the cut-out except it looks like it was part of the casting. I'll probably make mine smoother and then hit it with the air tool recommended above to make it blend in.

Mine also has the cutout, though it looks cast to me. This manifold was on the car when I bought it, for what its worth.

The manifold Ian posted is from his 59 Fuelie which does not have a hole at the top of the heat riser tube like the non-Fuelie type that I have.

I just checked all 4 of my 556 manifolds and all but one had the cut-outs as previously depicted. The one without the cut-out is a 556 B casting and it has very sharp casting flash in that area.
I originally thought it might have been a relief for A/C compressor clearance, but after some research, it looks like it may have been clearance for the heater hose bracket which bolted to the front generator mounting bolt and hung down in the area in question.

So we have 9 of the 556 castings with the cut-out and none without the cut-out. The first manifold I have looks like someone ground a little bit more off than the others. I cleaned that up with a grinder and the needle scaler recommended on this post and it looks just like the others. I appreciate all the response on this posting.

Do these manifolds crack much ? Should I hang on to a set of spares since I now have 2 sets ?
