VID number on '70 Turbo 400?

Anyone know if part of the VID serial number should be somewhere on an original Turbo 400 for '70 vette? I can't find it on mine.

I did find data plate on passenger side. It had some numbers engraved:

    '455' on top
'70-CS-' on lower left, and '3910' on lower right

Do these numbers look correct for '70 vette? thanks

Look for the VIN derivitive stamp on the Driver's side of the transmission partially hiden by the rubber bellows of the transmission shift linkage.

I'm not sure about the VIN derivative on THM-400's. I believe they were stamped with a VIN derivative but I just don't recall the location.

However, your transmission sounds like it's correct. The "70" indicates the model year and the "CS" is the proper production code for a THM-400 used with 454 engine application for Corvettes (and, incidentally, Monte Carlos).

Thanks. I removed the transmission from car. I don't see anything that looks like partial VID stamping at all. Do you know exactly where it would be? thanks

PS - I do have an original unrestored Monte Carlo SS. Since it sounds like they are the same transmissions, I will check that one to see if its there. Though it will be tough to get under the car until the spring. Car is tucked in corner of garage and the concrete is cold here in MA!

Steve, I can't be any more exact than my post above.

Terry, you were correct about the partial VIN number. I looked again - the numbers were there hiding under the grease. They were smaller than I expected, but the numbers were there and they do match my VIN starting with the '70S'. thanks! Steve

Those VIN numbers should be the same size as the VIN stamp on the engine pad. Made by the same person, with the same tool, at the same work station.

Interesting. They are exactly the same size as on engine.

Are there any other places on my car that should have these numbers besides front of engine block on pad, VIN plate, and transmission? Should it also be on frame and, if so, where on the frame?

Yes, a VIN derivative sequence is also stamped on the frame, usually in 2 places. Both stampings are on the top of the left side frame rail. One stamping is on the frame "kick-up" area APPROXIMATELY in line with the rear spindle. This stamping can be viewed between the top of the frame rail and the body, but it requires cleaning the frame rail first and using a mirror to observe the stamping. The other stamping is APPROXIMATELY at the door center. It cannot be seen with the body on the frame.

The font of the frame stamp will be different (at least you better hope it is) than those on the engine and transmission.

Thanks Joe and Terry. Sounds like it will be difficult to find the stamp on rear of frame with the body on, but I will give it a try. Steve
