thinking about this 66, what do u guys think?

first off my 1st question is if I bought this car and put side pipes on it would it have been possible for this car to have came with them by looking at the vin plate it has an A on it that either means it could have or couldn't have had them being built at that plant but I forgot which it is.

I normally wouldn't post a car I'm kinda looking at but his price is way higher than I think someone will give so I doubt I'll be able to get him down to what I would give for it.

was mainly curious if you could pull off puttting side pipes on it and it looking factory

    thanks

No AOS with sidepipes, would be immediately detected.

I believe no AO Smith cars had side pipes, so......

BTW, my 66 small block is only a hundred or so after this one. All the dates are in the ball park with mine.

no sidepipes possible means I'm not intrested, thanks!

quick quesion, you know by it saying A-429 ETC... that it couldn't have sidepipes so if I see A-xxxx BODY the A indicates it didn't come factory with sidepipes right off the bat correct?

what letters in place of the A came with sidepipes?

Brandon, there were two plants that made bodies. St. Louis and AO Smith. The A represents AO Smith, NO A means St. Louis.

Only St. Louis Bodies has sidepipes.

            This is something new

            Anyone notice this:

Q: What am I bidding on??? The car as it sits or a completed car in 2009? thanks
            Answered on Dec-08-08
            A:
The auction is for the completed car. Sorry for the confusion.

One is bidding on a restored car, yet to be restored.

Like bidding on futures. Risky business.

St Louis built bodies were identified by an "S" prefix on the TRIM TAG instead of an "A".

There are other differences as well on the mid-year TRIM TAG that will indicate a St Louis or an AO Smith built body, but the "S" or "A" will definitely tell you.

And there is no way to tell from VIN or Trim Tag if the car had factory side pipes. Check the archives lot's of posts real hard to convert a non pipe car to a pipe car if your going for judging, If your just buying a Corvette for FUN it does not matter if it's AO or Saint Louis.

                  details on vin stamp

Not to pick on this car, just trying to understand originality...
Look at the picture of the transmission stamp vs the pad stamp. The trans has a "S" in the vin. Is this correct (the add claims orig trans)? I thought that the assembly line stamped both the engine and transmission with the same vin stamp. Why would they change the characters in the gang stamp to do the transmission.

                    Rob,

I believe the "S" is correct for the trans sequence.

'66 uses an 'S" on the Trans stamp, where other years used the same stamp as used on the engine. I understand the plant complained so much to engineering about the extra labor involved that they went back to using the same stamp in the '67 MY.

The Vin. Nos. on the pad may be ok. I'm not comfortable with the "Overly Crisp look". Bottom of the 6 seems somewhat ok. You want pipes. I'd pass get the car you want. Too many questions.

Larry, I forgot that lousy S started when the A started. 63's and early 64's should not have an S.

                            What about '65 - no "S"?
