Should I Use Today's Windshield Washer Fluid?

    Your advise is needed again.

When I had the WW pump rebuilt, I seem to recall that Tom Maxwell advised me to only use distilled water, which I have done. But it is plenty cold here these days and I was wondering if regular washer fluid would harm the pump, if the pump is not used until the canister can be drained in the Spring. Another approach is to unhook four hoses and bring the thing in the house, except the car has to make a road trip in about a week.

Any thoughts on using something with an anti-freeze ingredient that wouldn't damage/gum-up the seals (other than vodka)??

    As always, my thanks.

What is the rationale for distilled water? Sounds like nonsense to me.

Windshield washer fluid has alcohol to lower the freezing point, and it might even have some anti-corrosion chemicals, and I would think it is much preferable to straight distilled water, which can be very corrosive to metals.

Is Mr. Maxwell known for pulling pranks on customers? My toys have nothing but regular W/S washer fluid since day on manufacture, as have my daily drivers. I have never had a failure. I cannot imagine how this fluid could damage a pump.

I think it had to do with avoiding tap-water mineral deposits, but it sounds like you guys feel that and any other harm is avoided with today's WW fluid.
        Thanks,

        Bill

Depending on the lowest expected temperature, windshield washer fluid can be diluted with water, and I would recommend distilled water in order to avoid introducing any unwanted salts.

But at a few bucks a gallon just use the fluid as it comes out of the jug - don't mess around with diluting it.
