Re: 63 340 SHP Short Block on EBAY
I havn't checked the block number against mine, but one quick look and I question the flat top pistons, and the breather can connection on the outside of the block - looks more like at least a 64 L-75 to me - again, first glance. Unlike many of my more learned members on the board, I can't recall part numbers or clearances off the top of my head. Sorry, but I've been on a heart/lung machine. I know, poor excuse.

Re: 63 340 SHP Short Block on EBAY
It's definately a 63 block and looks like a nice on at that. Flat tops can be changed with a professional hone. External vent bushing in the rear can be changed back to original configuration as I think the bushing is available.
What's really good is that I can't see serial # in photo and if it's void in the engine pad, this engine could find a wonderful home in a late January or Febuary car.
I don't think 4577 crank is used in 63, it's supposed to be 2680 but I think these cranks are the same and why the part # change I don't know. My 63 has 4577 crank but it also had 12/1 pistons. I have been told this crank has the same hardening treatment as the 2680 and the bearings look good by the pictures.
Getting off subject but the only problem I had with my 4577 crank was pilot hole in rear was drilled 1.084 so I had the new bushing turned .010 so fit was .002 interference. I would check this at machine shop before installation.
Stu, I hope you are OK and wish you the best.Last edited by Timothy B.; December 11, 2008, 05:42 AM.- Top

Re: 63 340 SHP Short Block on EBAY
Block mics out at 4.035 he says--so pistons have obviously been changed to .030-over in a prior rebuild.
Casting is A223 (January 22, 63) (The day I got my driver's license--my 16th birthday!) so it is obviously a 63 block, not a 64. Casting date and assembly date are harmonious. Looks like an over the counter real deal to me--wouldn't have a serial number stamping on the pad as an over the counter puchase, and this is from the time frame before they began stamping them with a CE sequence and code.- Top

Partial (short block) or fitted blocks from that era had no stamp on the pad at all.Last edited by Michael H.; December 11, 2008, 04:13 PM.- Top
