    1972 door vapor barrier

Does anyone know the mil thickness of the original door vapor barrier used on the 1969 - 1972's? Does 10 sound right???

    Hi Jerome,
I would have guessed at 6 or 8 mil, but you could be right at 10. I use 3 and 4 mil at my office and it's certainly more than that.
I'm curious about what you're getting ready to do.... and if you've found a way to duplicate the vacuum formed shape? I would love to hear about that.
    Regards,
    Alan

PS: I'm looking for a passenger's side barrier.

That is the 64 question "how to duplicate the vacuum/molded shapes"

I am looking for a pair myself and was told that they thought someone was producing them but with a mil thickness of 14 which I think is way to thick.

I have a NOS replacement still in the box of a vapor barrier and it is much thicker that the normal heavy mill building material at Home Depot. Where it is formed it holds it's shape and is stronger than the flat parts. I think it may be thicker in the molded areas.

At my place of employment, we use a heavy drum liner in our cadpack drums (cardboard sides) that we use for our nylon 6,6 flake. It looks to be the same thickness as the original vapor barrier. The liner comes in rolls. One liner looks like it would do two vapor barriers if you split it down the middle.

            Hi Lyle,
I'm curious about your NOS barrier.
Is the box marked as 'right or 'left'?
I've wondered over the years if there were lefts and rights or if there was just one and the vacuum formed areas were just 'deformed' from one side to the other to make a 'right' or left'?
I've always been a little surprised how intracately shaped the vacuum formed areas are, and how exact the perimeter shape cut is.
            Regards,
            Alan

As I recall they came in two boxes about 3"x3"X 48". The box was a foot longer than it needed to be and has all th GM parts order makings. Years ago I threw one box away as they both fit in one to take up less space.I'm sure they are rights and lefts.

For what it's worth, I bought a pair of door liners over the counter in 1988. I have them loose, not in the car, currently. I went out a few minutes ago and measured them, and they are 12 mils thickness. As I recall, I had to order a left and right. Looking in my 1953-1982 Parts and Illustration Catalog, would seem to confirm a left and right.

                  Hi Robert,
Thanks very much for measuring the barrier. We now know something that matters to only a handful of people in the entire world. I feel much better though for knowing. I'm actively looking for a passenger side barrier/shield for my 71.

                      Hi Robert,
I don't think business can be conducted on this board. But fishing is a sport isn't it?
                      Regards,
