    Opinions on Corvette Fever magazine

I came across an article from Corvette Fever online. It seemed pretty good. Is it worth subscribing to? Are there other Corvette mags that are better?

    Thanks,
    Joe

I emailed a letter to the editor of Corvette Fever regarding an article in the magazine. This was a couple of years ago, and Alan Colvin was the editor at the time. Long story short, their article contained gross factual errors which misinformed readers on the merits of a particular product. The tone of my letter was professional and in no way disrespectful to the magazine or staff. The response from Alan was shocking. He called me "a jerk" and made a vulgar remark (which I will not repeat) as to what he thought of my opinion. It was completely uncalled for. I immediately canceled my subscription, and I will NEVER give them another penny.

Way too much modified articles, but I guess I'm out of touch. I stopped my subscription after 15 years plus.

Even today when I thumb through the magazine at the news rack, I still see a whole host of problems and grammar problems.

            Joe;

Here is my opinion, for what it is worth; To begin with, a lot depends on your area of interest in Corvettes. I own a 63, have since new. Up until the newer C-6's, I have not had much interest in the newer models, because I don't know that much about them. Having said that, I still like them all and subscribe to almost all Corvette publications to keep abreast of what is being done with and to all Corvettes. I find I like some publications more than others because they cover more in areas of my interests. Aside from the NCRS publications, I would rate the "Commercial" publications as follows:

            1) Corvette Enthusiast (a high quality publication with many comprehensive articles covering all series - the kind you would want to retain in your reference library for years to come).

            2) Corvette Fever (a close second to #1 for the same reasons - many good "how to" articles for early series. I look forward to it every month).

            3) Corvette Magazine (also a high quality publication - good market analysis section, "how to" articles good, but mostly for later series).

            4) Vette Vues Magazine ( a lot of information in a small package - so much in fact that you feel cheated that they couldn't tell you more. Love the Alan Kaplan and Ken Kayser "Factory Facts" and Historical information Articles, as well as the scale model coverage).

            5) Vette (used to be #1 with me, but their evolution into mostly all late series coverage does not do much for me. It will be the first Corvette Publication I have not renewed).

As a caveat to the above, I also get; "Super Chevy", "Chevy High Performance", "Hot Rod", and "Popular Hot Rodding", as well as "Car and Driver", "Motor Trend", and "Road and Track". I will also let the last 3 expire because they have evolved into mostly foreign car publications which (as a retired GM employee), I have no interest in. Car and Driver is about the worst. It seems to be targeted toward an audience of Liberal Snobs (and yet they drive the awful roads of Michigan).

Corvette Fever isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I've never seen a rag that has so much incorrect info. The only one out there that is any good is Corvette Enthusiast. The rest are a waste of money.

Donald, that you for sharing that story. That information is good enough for me.
Since joining this fine organization, one of the most important benefits to me is getting good advice as to who one should do business with, or who not to do business with.
I have been referred to many, many fine vendors of parts, or restorative services. Many have been fellow NCRS members. 98% have been great to work with. Unfortunately, a couple of people, were too difficult to work with.
One thing I refuse to work with, is when I contact a person for consideration of hiring him (or her), and be made to feel like "they might do me a favor" by working for me. One of the people who treated me like this, was later described to me as "been ill, and not feeling well, from health problems" I find an attitude of acting like you are doing the person a favor by taking their money for work, services, or parts,.....inexcusable in 100% of all cases.
Once again, thank you for sharing the story about this publisher.

I subscribed for a year and then didn't renew. I was looking for articles and info on C1, C2, and C3 original corvettes because I was getting ready to purchase one but mostly what the magazine offered was articles on modifieds and newer vettes. I do subscribe to Corvette Market and like it alot, but it's only a quarterly magazine.

Re: Opinions on Corvette Fever magazine

I would sure love to see the contents of the column and the exchanges before I make any judgements. I have on a number of instances read those of interest incuding responses to my own "Letters to the Editor" where it was obvious we had a "generation disconnect". The new breed think they know it all right out of school and don't have to consider the opinion of those of us who have years of experience and knowledge to draw on. They tend to be quite nasty and condescending, but I don't hold it against the value of the entire publication. That is something like "cutting off your nose to spite your face". As for me with "Vette" magazine - the decision to let my subscription expire did not come easy. They have been the source a lot of information and interesting reading in the past, but when you go month after many months of paging through each new issue and finding nothing to make you want to revisit it, rather it just goes in a pile on the shelf, then it is time to pull the plug and save some money.

Re: Opinions on Corvette Fever magazine

I had the same experience Donald Terry had. I wrote Colvin on the same article and got a similar reply. I was flabbergasted. The article was about some "Turbo-whiz-bang-doohickey" that you installed in your air cleaner and it gave you an additional 5 mpg in fuel economy. I couldn't believe such foolishness could escape the editor and get in the magazine. But Colvin not only defended putting it in his magazine, but also defended the product. I cancelled after that.

"Corvette Enthusiast" is good. That's because John Hinckley writes for it. His articles are great.

P.J. O'Rourke writes for "Car and Driver." He'd think calling that magazine "liberal" would be pretty funny.

Re: Opinions on Corvette Fever magazine

I just paged through the last two issues of CF and I do get one overall impression that perhaps a lot of our members may not appreciate - that is that many of the artcles are about cars that are driven, in fact are "high Mileage" examples from all vintages. I guess I can say I identify with them somewhat in that I have driven my 63 since new and am interested in various aspects of what it takes to keep them maintained and running well.

As for "Car and Driver" magazine, I believe I said it was "Targeted" toward Liberal Snobs, not that it was written by them. All you need do is read a few of their "Letters to the Editor" for my source of that impression.

Re: Opinions on Corvette Fever magazine

My opinion as well is that Corvette Fever isn't worth anything. I started subscribing in Feb 1985 to Keepin' Track of Vettes, which was purchased by CF in 1991 so I've gotten CF since that time. The last couple of years have been horrible for that magazine with bad writing, horrible accuracy and more. Tom Benford is the worst writer I've ever seen in a Corvette magazine - and in almost 24 years of subscribing that's been a lot of writers. I did not renew this year; I wasn't going to last year but my wife sent in the renewal without asking me.

Having said that, I agree that Vette Magazine doesn't turn me on anymore either. However, since I wrote articles for them for a few years in the mid-90s it's hard for me to cancel.

                          Corvette Enthusiast is the best.

For some reason I've never subscribed to Vette Vues.

                          That's my take on them.

i began subscribing to Corvette Fever when jim prather was editor/owner, back in the 70's . it was printed on a couple sheets of paper. it was then THE best source of nos and used vette parts and used vettes. i watched it deteriorate until cancelling my subscription a year or so ago. mike

I remember one article about brakes where the data defied the laws of physics. I think they just published the manufacturer's data. Ridiculous. However, I subscribe because their articles on C4 Wear and Tear are easily worth the money. I have learned a ton.
