Don't know what the perfect 9 fins will cost. Last time I saw a 64/65 FI system at a Bowling Green function years ago it was $5k. A friend that attended Carsile this year told me the same rebuilder had one for $12,000.

Roy, I saw a set with no nicks or scratches go for $360 at Pate Swap Meet this year. They were not in the boxes and looked as if they were never on an engine.

Roy, there is currently a reskinned set on e-Bay from a '56. A couple of days left and the price is about $150.00 likely heading upward.

Roy, actually there are three sets on ebay right now. One unrestored set at opening bid of $495, one nice set reskinned with unknown reserve and one equally nice set with a buy it now price of $879. Do you have some laying around that you would like to let go of cheap? All limited production parts like these 1 1/2 year only valve covers continue to climb in price.......like it has for years.

            Re: 9 fin valve covers

Roy, Refinished (not reskinned) 9 fin valve covers can go for 8 to 900 with no problem. So the ebay price of $879 for the refinished is right on the money.

John, please indulge me. What is the difference in reskinned and refinished? This is the first time I have heard a third level of surface description.

'About 6 sets on ebay now, at least one is a repro. I have only seen the repros online but it appears at the least the script is incorrect, there are no PN's or icon on the inside. 'Anything else?

I bought a set on Ebay last month for $425 and they were in pretty nice shape.

Steve, you must have better eyes than I do. I only find three sets of 9 fins for sale on ebay in the '56/'57 sections. I see a lot of 7 fins though. I also was not aware that the 9 fins were ever reproduced. I can say that I have had at least five sets of 9 fins over the last eight or so years and have never seen a set that didn't have the part number on the inside. I would like to know more about the 9 fin reproductions.

Hi Garry! I searched on Corvette 9 fins earlier today and put them in my "watched" file. I just looked and there are now five, the set at $879.95, $550, $495, $400, the repro set from California at $120 (item 400014497509) and a set that ended today at $256.

I had not seen the repros until today and did not know about them. They are not stagger mounts (woops!), and the script is not even close. Right, there are alot of 7 fins.

Your eyes ARE better than mine. So is your search ability. I do see all five sets now. Like you, I have never seen repro's of the 9 fins and with the non-staggered holes we probably won't see many more. They might look interesting on a late production '59 on up though?

Garry, I did get a different number of covers come up depending on how I searched. When I searched "Corvette 9 fin" under ALL categories the larger number of covers came up. An ebay thing I guess. I would have thought if someone was going to all the trouble of casting they would have taken the mold from an original cover.

                            Re: 9 fin valve covers

OK, I have a question / comments about 9 fins (and aluminum valve covers in general). This is probably geared more towards those who understand the restoration process.

Damaged (cracks, broken fins, etc.) valve covers can be repaired (welded, etc.) and then refinished to a nice quality.

Valve covers that have been previously welded, and the work was not done properly, are difficult to properly redo the repair, but it can be done.

Valve covers with corrosion damage (pits in the surface, especially the flat surfaces) are just about impossible to properly refinish to remove the corrosion. Very slight corrosion can be massaged into something that looks decent.

Previously polished valve covers can be refinished to a nice quality.

The best place to start is with a set of undamaged, unmolested valve covers. These can be refinished to top quality.

So, in order of preference, as a starting point:

                            1. Undamaged, unmodified -> top quality refinish
                            2. Undamaged, polished -> near top quality refinish
                            3. Damaged, not previously repaired -> near top quality refinish
                            4. Damaged, improperly previously repaired -> decent refinish
                            5. Corrosion damage -> very difficuly to refinish and look OK

Does this sound right to those who know?
