I have been told on this board to use G-06 Zerex anti freeze but I can not find it anywhere. Is it still made and where can I find it? Thanks in advance

Jerry:
It's Zerex G-05. NAPA lists it on their website and carries it in their stores. That's were I would try. You can also buy the same thing from Chrysler/Dodge and Ford parts counters. The MOPAR part number is #05066386AA and/or MS-9769. It is a pink/orange color, but is the same stuff as G-05. Trust me. I do not have the FORD part number handy, but it is the "gold colored" HOAT antifreeze used in their diesel trucks. The parts man should know the number, as they only carry one or two different types.
Or go to the Zerex site and ask for their distributors in your area.
As a last resort, use Prestone yellow/green colored antifreeze. The one in the yellow plastic bottle. Not quite the same as G-05, but very close.
Stay away from the DEX-COOL.

Re: C-1 Anti Freeze
Larry why do you mention to stay away from DEX-COOL? I have used it in my 96 LT4 since it was new. I have changed the DEX-COOL twice.
Unless GM has changed, it is still being used in new Corvettes including the the $100,000+ ZR-1.Last edited by Jim T.; December 3, 2008, 08:01 PM.- Top

Re: C-1 Anti Freeze
The coolant manufacturers recommend not changing the older cars to Dex Cool. They recommend using what it was originally equipped with. The HOAT coolants are replacing the OAT products. Soon the regular green will go the way of old alcohol antifreezes of the '50'sDick Whittington- Top

Re: C-1 Anti Freeze
DEX-COOL is perfectly fine for original applications that specified it. The materials used in the car's cooling/heating system and engine are compatible with the antifreeze chemistry, the system was prepared correctly for the initial factory fill, and the coolant recovery system minimizes contact with air. ie. the car and antifreeze chemistry were designed together.
On the older cars, this is not the case. Especially at risk is the lead solder joints used in brass heater cores and radiators. There have been reports of other issues as well. Why take a chance when G-05 doesn't have these issues....and has better chemistry than the older green (inorganic chemistry) type?
This question has generated much (some say too much) discussion in the past. It's all there in the archives.

Re: C-1 Anti Freeze
Larry thanks for your reply. I can certainly be wrong about this, however I thought that I had read years ago, before G-05 that DEX-COOL was better to use than the green anti-freeze.
G-05 is not even carried at my local NAPA, Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or OReilly's the last time I checked.- Top

Re: C-1 Anti Freeze
Jim:
G-05 was used in Europe long before anybody ever thought about creating DEX-COOL here in the USA. Mercedes-Benz used it as well as other European car manufacturers. That's why Chrysler specified it for their cars after the Daimler-Chrysler merger (buy-out).
DEXCOOL is/was a joint effort between Texaco and GM.
Prestone made the first USA product that was similar to G-05.....called Prestone Long-Life 4/60. Then they stopped production (somewhere around 2002) and later brought out their (similar)yellow/light green antifreeze that is sold today. This yellow/light green Prestone is also a HOAT type, like Zerex G-05. But the additives are different and they are not identical.
Regarding G-05 availability, read my reply to Jerry, above.
