    69 L89 exhust system

This is a points vs performance question. I want to use a 2 1/2" exhaust system from Allens but not loose all judging points. Would someone "estimate" the points loss for this system: 2 1/2" aluminized pipes, welded muffler, correct steel clamps, hangers, heat riser and exhaust tips. Scoring sheet shows total 28 originality and 22 condition. This car is too much fun to be a "never driven trailer queen!" Thanks, Lynn Schwebach

I do not judge chassis, but will venture to guess that you will lose 30% of the originality points, for configuration, material, etc.

Lynn my estimate would be because of the aluminized finish and the config being 2 1/2" and the other little things that an Allens system would be dinged for. 25 to 40 % depending where it is judged and by who so 7 points low side 12 points high side. With that if the condition is very good no deduct due more then 10 percent on originality or very small as it ages. Some judges may do 50% or slightly more but you would still get condition points. I do a lot of chassis judging for 68 thru 82 and that would be my take but there maybe other thoughts on that. Paul 18046

        Thanks Paul,
Appreciate the estimate point loss and I don't feel this is significant. Will find points else where. Also exhaust is an easier item to replace if I want a 100% correct car. Not like a trans or rear end. Lynn Schwebach

This is not an answer to your question but a observation. I feel the difference in performance of original 2" to the 2 1/2' would be so small it would not be noticible. My stock L88 ran SUPER through 2" under car exhaust, stronger than my 435 with chambered side pipes or my brothers 435 with sidemount open headers.

That might have something to do with the Motor and H.P. in the L88

I agree. I don't think there's much performance difference between the 2" and 2-1/2" systems.
