    Judging Questions on Distributor

Trying to correct all my point hits for next season, but confused on a few.

1 Got hit on "Distributor, cap & vacuum advance" for 1 on original, remember the judge said something about cap not right! Anyone have picture of a correct 64 FI cap? Dist is original along with vac advance - can not post mine since file is too large. It does have the "patent pending" without the "R"

2 It was noted that the connections on the coil should be of the "dog legs"
Not sure what that is, however its a TI setup so suspect its the point set up that has these "dog legs"

Alan -- here's 2 pics of a D-310 'short tower' '63-65 FI cap (also on Olds V8's, which is where I got this one ).

Am not familiar with the "dog-leg" coil connections, but I'm guessing that it means the type seen on the end of the black wires shown in 3rd pic. Note that the white insulated wires have the more conventional type of U-connection. The pair on the left are from a '65 396 harness; the ones on the right are from a '66. I also have a repro set of '65 wires and they BOTH have the 'dog-leg' type. Don't see mention of this in the '65 TIM&JG.

Per the vac can, should be a "236". can take pics if you need some particular details.

Thanks Wayne - now I understand dog leg, mine is the same as your pictures so the comment was not correct (on judging sheet)
The Cap is the same as yours also so not sure what is wrong. Vac can is a 236.

Don't know what your car has, but there are currently reproductions of the Delco caps, and there is a small but discernable variation from the originals in the area of the points window.

AC Delco made two versions of the Cap 1993047 or short number D310. The original Verison and a later issued version with the letter R on it. The cap with the R on it is correct in every detail except the letter R. (Which can be removed from the cap).

Here is a picture of a NOS

Here is a picture of the last cap made by Delco.

Thanks to everyone for the great pictures.

The cap and wiring I have are correct so I'm not sure what the judges were talking about. Just wait till next summer and see what happens. One more minor item checked off.

Is there a discernible difference between an NOS cap and the repop in the lettering around the center post? Perhaps one or the other has a more "raised" appearance or more pronounced lettering? Thought I had read that on this board. That's my story but I may not be sticking to it!
              Best regards,

Why not take some pictures of everything and send to your team leader for his opinion rather than waste all winter and most of spring.

Alan.... I have the FI distributor cap that was removed from Ralph Salyers A/P SCCA 63 car with only about 7 miles on it in 1963. I can send or post pic's if you'd like. As far as I know, it's identical to all later service Delco FI short tower caps.
