    Judging Sheets Abbreviations

Would anyone have a good source for the abbreviations used on judging sheets?

      Re: Judging Sheets Abbreviations

      Hi! Michael

When I had my 63 judged there were many different aberrations, with two different abbreviations for the same reference by two different judges. I would like to create a sheet that can be given to the owner of a judged car to help them understand the Judging language or abbreviations. It would be nice if this was a National sheet, but at least it would cover the abbreviations on the sheet that I filled out.

The guys I work with use a rubber stamp with the abbreviated legend at the top of the first sheet.
Those that don't usually write the legend at the top.
Couple of others are: S/B-Should Be, S/R-Service Replacement

Some type of "standardized" abbreviations might be very useful for all of us - judges and owners alike.

I also usually use a mechanical pencil when I judge. That way it is always sharp and my writing always legible (yah, even for a doctor ).

Bill Sangrey has a stick on label that he places on the bottom of the judging sheet that has all the abbreviation he uses and the definition there of.
Ironically I was just looking at my 63 judging sheets from the last (and only) three shows. Here is Bills info when he did the interior on my car at the Marlborough regional in 06.

This should help you get started. Good idea. John D.
P.S. I forgot something. Bill also has his name and address at the bottom of the label.

                      Re: Judging Sheets Abbreviations

Whoa. Guys, it's really does not have to be this complex.
In an attempt to over simplify, this will require the Judges, owners and any one else involved to learn a new language. Making this much more difficult than it needs to be.
There will be no end to the exponential possibilities to expand the abbreviations list.
I believe in keeping any process simple, yet as effective as possible.
Aside from the basic abbreviations that everyone recognizes, I believe Judges should explain the reason for the deductions taken. This means, as intended, writing enough detail on the sheets to be understood by any reader accompanied with the appropriately articulated Owner's review.
Remember, many of the owner's are not the astute investors or the knowledgable hobbyist, but, every day Joes/Janes who are presenting their car for judging for the first and perhaps only time.

                        Re: Judging Sheets Abbreviations

Simplicity and clarity are essential elements of effective communication.

I have seen judging sheet comments with so many abbreviations, they looked like pages of teen text messages...

While I do not disagree with the use of short hand (necessary when the division is full and cars have many issues) those using such have the responsibility to provide a reference key; written, a stamp, or label.

In the example above, a judge made a questionable call at a chapter meet I did not attend. Weeks later the owner contacted me asking for an explanation of POD (poor handwriting, it was an R ) claiming the call was not explained... A simple question became needlessly complicated, even with the detailed description provided in the CTIM&JG.

In my opinion, the judge would have been wiser to simply note "aged" and deduct for condition if warranted.

                          Re: Judging Sheets Abbreviations

I have a habit when I use an abbreviation on a judging sheet to write the meaning of it on the bottom of the judging sheet. I also explain it to the owner when reviewing the sheets with him or her.

                            Re: Judging Sheets Abbreviations

It should be noted that abbreviations like POR and COR can stand alone, while NTP and SR are only acceptable when followed by an explanation of the deviation.
