    Re: Engine suffix code label

I just made a label using the suggested material. I didn't have the Futura Condensed font in Microsoft Word 2003 so I used "Tw Cen MT Condensed Extra Bold" in 76 point. Then I condensed it a little further and printed it. It looks really good (I think) but I can't post a picture because I dont have a color scanner here. I will take a picture of it tonight and post tomorrow.

      Re: Engine suffix code label

Just for fun was the code on the label you though was a 73 still used in 76. I think codes like CLA were used in many years. I agree the label you have is real. 73 valve covers are a one year only part so if your picture shows the brackets on the cover I may be able to tell the year or years the cover was used on Corvettes. I don't have the pictures on this computer but I think the 73 labels were the same size and font as the 71 label posted by Dave S. in this thread.

However, given the similarities of the two labels as well as the similarities to other mid-70s labels I've seen, I don't know why the 73 I sent you wouldn't be considered "real." It's definitely not a home-made repro, that's for sure. Even though it was found on a valve cover at a swap meet, I don't doubt its authenticity. Too many small things are correct about it.

Send me a pic of a 73 label if you can. I'd be interested in seeing one from your collection.

Here's the label that I created. This is just a first stab at it. The label measures 2 1/4" x 1 1/8", per the Judging guide. Let me know what you think.

          Kenneth,

What font did you use on the label?

            Stephen,

I used "Tw Cen MT Condensed Extra Bold" in 76 point. The font is one of the TrueType fonts included with Microsoft Word 2003.

It should judge well. I like the C. On 73's the suffix code label is two points so some degree of being not correct may slip by.

My original 71 LT-1 CGZ label is slightly shorter than 2" (1.950) and right at 1 1/8" tall (1.145) For what it's worth---

From all of the posts, it looks like the height is pretty consistent at 1 1/8" but the width varies somewhere between 2" and 2 1/4".

1978-1979 Tech Info Manual & Judging Guide reads " The absence or presence of these labels is not a factor in judging." in reference to the Engine Suffix Code Label.

Hi Folks, here's a photo of my '70 LS5 Bowtie's valve cover decal. The previous owner noticed the decal flapping in the wind and fortunately removed it for posterity. My car is VIN 531, Jan 5, 1970.

Hugh...by 78 we have so many emission labels, safety messages and the like to check, writers gave us a pass on the valve cover engine suffix code labels.
