68 BB start up in chasis

this weekend I am going to start up my 68 BB. The body is off and I was hoping someone has done this in the past and could guide through some set up steps with the electrical and water hook ups.

    Hello Joseph,
I have done this with my 68 435. You need the Battery + to starter and Ground to Engine block. You need to connect a remote starter switch. ( Simple Normally open Pushbutton switch) You can buy online or at any Auto store or do what I did and use a doorbell switch glued into the end of a piece of PVC conduit. This would go from the battery + terminal on the starter or the battery to the solinoid connection marked S. Then you need to connect your ignition. The way you do that will depend on what type of ignition you have. Stock Points, Stock TI or aftermarket. If you post what you have I will let you know how to connect it. One thing to be sure of is that you make sure all wiring is fused and routed in such a way that it doesn't fall on a hot exaust manifold or header. If this is not done you could have a fire at worst or some melted wires at best. I would also connect a battery disconnect switch on the battery positive terminal.
As far as cooling goes I have the core support and radiator installed on the frame and connected as normal. I used a two foot piece of heater hose and bypassed the heater connections on the intake and water pump.
I use this setup to start my engine several times a year to keep it lubed up and make sure it still runs OK. Remember to keep a fire extinguisher handy!
    Hope this helps,
    Bill

Joseph this is how I did it, not quite as refined(electricaly) as Bill's but it did the trick.

I have point ignition and used four wires.

      1) Neg bat cable from battery to output shaft housing bolt.
      2) 14 gage wire from starter "S" terminal long enough to reach battery.
      3) 14 gage wire from ignition coil "+" terminal long enough to reach battery.
      4) Pos bat cable from starter solenoid terminal to battery.

The pos and neg cables generally stayed hooked up. When I went to run it I used an alligator clip to connect the ign coil to the pos side of the battery and then just touched the wire from the "S" terminal of the solenoid to the pos side of the battery and it fired right up. I didn't bother with a ballast resistor in-line for this temporary set-up.

The cooling was set up pretty much as it would be in the car as per the pics. I used my old rad support and expansion tank and the only thing missing was the heater. Make sure and use a fan shroud too! The rad mounted pretty solidly but I still used that 1x3 wooden brace just so that it would be "sucked" back into the fan.

Well they say a pic is worth a thousand words so have a look at my pics and feel free to ask if you have any questions.

well I tried to upload the pics but the site won't let me. says that I already posted them in an earlier post so I guess pics can only be posted once here????? Anyways here is a link to my earlier post with some of the pics. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...61044&uid=3626 If you would like to see the rest just e-mail me and I'll send them to you.

If this is the engine start up for the firs time, make sure you follow the cam Break-in procedures. I suggest you also hook up a temperature and oil pressure gauge.

This is how I hooked up my oil and temp indications. The oil gauge is screwed into the boss with a 45 degree fitting and some old adapters(hence the small leak) and the temp gauge was inserted where the sender goes and then I tie-wrapped it to the oil gauge. Ya can't get more simple than that!

Thanks for the replies. Those pics are worth a thousand words. This is my first resto and have learned alot quickly. My engine builder said he wanted to be there when I started it. I m giving it a try tommorrow.
            Thanks Joe
