    vent window regulator rebuild

i am looking for advice on rebuilding my broken regulators, i must be missing some part that was riveted on, the spiral gear spins out of the back, and the part that turns the "T" does not turn. the rebulid kits that I have seen do not have the cover for the spiral gear. do most people use these for cores, and have these rebuilt by someone experenced? , if so who? or are repros any good

If you have the backing plate, you can fix the regulator (assuming your gears are OK) by grinding the cast housing level with the plate and drilling and tapping the housing as shown in page 10 of the attached PDF. You can get replacement pivot gears if you need them. Don't know about the spiral gears but they are usually intact as they are steel and not pot metal.

        Robert,
A vendor that advertises in The Driveline sells the gear set that can easily be installed; however, I can not gaurantee that a new gear set will take the play out of the vent window.
        Best regards,

Thanks David, you were exactly right. The pivot gear is the only damaged part. However I can't find the Backing Plates (I bought a basketcase). Do you or anyone else know if repros are around? or if maybe another chevy product might have these same BACKING PLATES.

That is a great article you attached!! It already helped with a picture of the seperated backing plate

          Thanks Again Robbie

Some of the older passenger GM care used the same or very similar vent -window regulators. I fished a pair out of an old Chevy wagon (64 maybe). When my better half and I first got them out, one was missing the backing plate also. Believe it or not, a few months, later I was in the area of the yard where I got the regulators (about 80 miles from home) and I went back to the same car and found the backing plate in the bottom of the door. Apparently, that's a common place to find them. I guess that peened over stud just didn't cut it very well. Check inside the door if you haven't done that already. Hope you find it there!

            P.S.
Here is a post by a fellow from another web site:

Rebuilding the regulators is a pretty straight-forward repair that can be accomplished by almost anyone. Even if the backing plate has been lost, you can make a new one out of some 3/16" steel plate in just a few minutes. Corvette USA is the sole supplier of these kits, and they are very good kits. The new gear is made from 6061 T^ aluminum rather than the cheap pot metal that the original worm gears were made from. It should last several lifetimes!

            Regards,

And this from another at the same site:

When I removed my vent window regulator my backing plate was missing also. I couldn't find a new one anywhere. I tried finding a used one but nobody wanted to sell it without the whole assembly so I built my own. Not difficult and works well.

I did eventually find the old one hiding at the bottom of the door.

The regulator in my 66 had the same problem. I made a plate out of aluminum I had laying around and drilled and tapped the holes worked like a charm . When I reinstalled the unit I found the missing plate in the bottom of the door. Where else could it go? This is an easy fix and you can get the gears from a number of sources.
