Space saver spare tires for 59

I will be running radial tires on my 59 (when I get it all back together) and I am looking for the best way to carry a spare that will allow the spare tire cover to lay flat.

Looking at the specs on radials, it doesn't appear possible to put one in the spare tire well and have the board lay flat. My two thoughts are 1.) a space saver tire that some of the manufacturers used to use; 2.) an original equipment bias ply tire.

It would be for emergency use only. To get me to a service facility to get a flat fixed.

Any thoughts as to which may ber safer for the short drive or any other alternative?

    Thanks - Sully

For my '54, I configured the radial spare with an innertube and I store it deflated. My reinflation strategy, should it ever be needed, is to use a can or two of Fix-a-Flat to pump it back up. The plywood cover sits flush over the deflated tire.

On a car with a 12V system, you could simply carry one of those electric pumps instead of the aerosol cans I have to carry.

The temporary spare tire/wheel from a 90's S-10 truck fits nicely in a midyear tub with room to spare and is the same diameter as the original tires; might also fit the well in a C1.

If you're looking for a radial tire and don't care if the wheel is stock, try a T155/90/D16 mini spare (donut spare). They are used on newer GM S10 pickups and Blazers. Fits in the well, bolts up nicely, and is the same diameter as a 205/75/15 radial. It fits easily in the spare tire well of my '60. Should be cheap ($10-$20) at your local auto recycling center.
