I have never been one to rely on the gasket alone (except head gaskets) and usually apply a thin film of Permatex since the cured excess peels away nicely. I am about to replace the differential cover. I have a high quality gasket and wanted to get some thoughts on the use of additional sealant. I have polished up the casing and would hate to have to clean it up again in the event the gasket "alone" should not seal. I appreciate any thoughts on this. Thanks, Mike

Re: Carrier cover gasket install
Mike,
I don't see where it would hurt to use a little sealer sparingly just to stick the gasket. Don't think I did when installing the cover on my rebuilt 3.36 because these are two heavy flat parts and the cover bolts are not through holes.
Never had a problem but I checked things very well before assembling the cover and sure understand your concern. If I used a sealer it would probably be something like the old permetex not the RTV stuff. Use a torque wrench when tightening the cover bolts.- Top

Over the years, I've used the spray-on copper gasket coating to give a better seal. Various companies make the product.- Top

Re: Carrier cover gasket install
Thank you Guys,
All great recommendations. I'll also fill and roll it around for a few days to see that the new flange seals are holding along with the gasket. You Guys are great. Thanks, Mike- Top
