    327/350HP Engine

Starting to collect parts for a '67 327/350HP engine. Did this engine come with a windage tray? Is the oil pan the same as a 300HP engine?
Block currently has the correct pistons and "202" valve heads, but wrong balancer. I've got the correct timing cover for the 8 inch balancer and a replacement GM balancer(without fins). If I can find a finned balancer, what dates should I be looking for?(car is a late Feb '67)
Was the steering dampner used with this engine/oil pan configuartion?
    Thanks,
    Lou

    Lou,

Let's take a shot at your question. Yes, the 350HP had a windage tray and the oil pan was the same. Based on the fact that you could get PS with that engine it could not have had the larger pan.

Steering dampner, I don't think so but somebody with better knowledge should take this one.

I don't think the 1967 L-79 used a windage tray. All 1967 small blocks, base engine and L-79, used oil pan GM #3820000. This is the "5 quart" system (i.e. 4 quarts+ 1 quart with filter change). I don't know of any windage tray GM ever had during the 63-67 period designed to work with this pan.

As far as I know, all 1963-67 small blocks with the "5 quart" pan and without power steering used the steering damper. Cars with the "6 quart" pan (i.e. L-76, L-84 and, perhaps, some 1965 L-79), all big blocks, and, of course, cars with power steering did not use a steering damper.

        Louie,

The only L79 to use the 6 quart oil pan, were some very early 1965 examples. All the rest used the 5 quart pan, which allowed either power steering ram or steering damper piston, in keeping with the notion of a "kinder and gentler" SHP small block.
The stamp, which should appear adjacent to the fins on the back side of the torsional damper, should be in keeping with the standard "six month" rule for all components related to the subassembly within which it resides. Thus, it should be dated within six months prior to your engine's assembly date.
