    Life Magazine images

Google has recently archived millions of images from Life Magazine. There are several pages of photos of 1953 (and maybe 54/55) Corvettes that I found interesting. Looks to be mostly testing and road driving shots.

http://images.google.com/hosted/life is the primary link, enter 'Corvette' in the search field.

Now I Know how the black gooo got washed off my 63 before delivery. They must have sent it through the water torture test right off the assembly line.

Neat photo of some early GM Small blocks with painted exhaust manifolds.

                  Hi John, very cool pics.
Do you know the vintage of the engines? They appear to be early 2 bbls for powerglides.

                        Mike,

I'm no expert, but my guess would be '67's base motors.

Are not almost all the pictures from 1959? Wait another board different post. But I think the engine picture cam from this group.

They look like '57 engines to me. The clues I see are steel valve covers with vertical ends (as opposed to the slanted ends on '60s era steel covers) and the silver painted "Chevrolet" script. Silver script, as far as I know, was a one-year color ('55 and '56 were black) and scripts were unpainted after '57.

                              So, '57 is my guess.

                              Jim

EDIT: Well after looking at all of the assembly plant photos and noting that ALL of the bodies being assembled are '59s, it sure seems apparent that the engines are '59 engines also. But I sure didn't know they were still painting the scripts as late as '59. Here, I've got a late '57 production (passenger car) engine that has never been apart that has never shown any evidence of painted valve cover scripts. I've owned this engine for 42 years. I had reasoned that script painting had probably been phased out during MY '57. Now I don't know what to believe.
