    Re: 64 accelerator arm groundstrap

A few comments - the 64 AIM does not show a star washer at the accelerator lever nor at the wire support where it is attached on Top. Interesting to note that the same AIM shows the star washer, #1 pn 121753, at the other body locations. It has been mentioned in the past that a star washer was only used in the painted areas to assure a good ground.

Now the 63/64 JG does mention an "external washer", however the diagram in the JG does NOT show said washer - so a conflict in the JG exists.
I asked a team leader about the AIM v JG at a National Meet and was told go with the AIM!

My accelerator lever also has no sign of any damage which would be caused by the washer. Don't know why these external tooth washers keep getting added to things?? Next thing you know they will appear on the fuel filter bracket!

Good Grief Alan, you mean we should disreguard the 64 AIM and replace the fuel filter flat washer PN 120394 and the clean air tube identical washer with a 'star' washer?

          Re: 64 accelerator arm groundstrap

Hate to reopen this thread but with all the discussion lately about the 63/64 TGJM I have another question related to the accelerator ground strap bolt and non existent star washer.

I am getting ready to have my '64 judged for the final time at the 2014 National Convention. The last time it was judged I took a 1 point deduct for the accelerator ground strap bolt being to long. What I have installed is a 1/4-20 bolt that measures 1/2 inch in length from the shoulder of the bolt head to the end if the threads. From my research of the archives and looking at all the pictures that members have shared it appears that this is the correct length bolt. I also have read that there is no star washer. I did have one installed and did not take a deduct even though there should not be one installed per A.I.M. I suppose I will need to drag my A.I.M. with me to dispute this.

          Thanks,

          James West

Hi James, I measured my accel. bolt in the car and it is .680 long including the head, counter sunk, 3/8 head, with thread cutting slot in threaded portion. Ig. shield bolt has ext tooth star washer built in, 7/16 head, counter sunk. Good luck.

              Dan,

Thanks for the reply. I have the same accelerator ground strap bolt sitting on my work bench and it measures 6.887 inches from the top of the bolt head to the end of the threads. This is the bolt that the judges said is too long. I have an un-restored '65 that has the same bolt. Now do I put it back on and argue with the judges for one point or just leave the supposedly correct one that I put in last night per the current 63/64 TGJM.

              Thanks,

              James West

James, bolt sounds right on, I'd use what you think is original, not what a JG thinks it is. The Judges are probably used to looking at the bolt with the boogus star washer on it making it shorter. The National Judges should be on top of it, should be good, have fun,

                  Re: 64 accelerator arm groundstrap

Well... the same guy that judged my car on the mechanical section and deducted the point was the same guy (lead mechanical judge) that judged 63/64 mechanical at the 2013 National Convention and again at the North Central Regional this last May. Knowing that he will more than likely judge in KC I doubt he'll get it right!!! Just pondering whether I should put the correct one back on or leave the incorrect one on and get the full points.

                  I want my points back!!!

                  Thanks,

                  James West

James, it's the same bolt that holds on most of the other ground straps, are any others original? Find a Bowtie car and see what it has, just to satisfy yourself.
