hmm..the master cylinder cap I bought isn't 100% dead on for my 68. VERY close tho

Bought a "EXACT" copy of my 68's master cylinder cap but it says J something or other than I just read started in 69 and up.

Question is where do you buy a EXACT EXACT cap for a 68?

    thanks

Start collecting like I did 15 years ago.
THey don't make a 100% repop cap. It is 90% correct. The stamped letters on the repop is larger and the W is squished together. Also you noticed the bottom dome ring has a sharper edge vs original is more smooth. This is for the 67 and 68 cap only. 69 and up has J1703 Under the SAE and next to it it has Brake Fluid on the side vs 67 68 only has Fluid.
Left is original, center is repop, and right is 69 up
    Hope this helps. Grant

I would settle for a re-pop of a 68 style without the J1703 written on it. Where would I find one? Because when I bought this one I think it said 68-69 or like 68-73 or something like that. So, I assumed it would be correct for mine but nope.

Check out http://www.cssbinc.com/mastercylinders.aspx . They have a pretty good reproduction. Look at the 67 master cylinder cap as it has the correct wording for a 68.

thanks john. Hey, is there any differences between 67 and 68 caps? before I order it?

I know the wording is right but are there any of differences?

on that site they have 68-72 caps see thats I think what mine said....I paid like $26 for it too

          thanks

The few I have compared looked the same, but if I'm wrong, I'm sure some one will correct me.

The vent holes on the original are punched in and on the repros punched out.

The 68-69 Technical Judging Guide says that for a 68 cover, the wording on one of the domes should be "USE DELCO BRAKE FLUID ONLY". The reproduction cover says "USE DELCO BRAKE FLUID". It omits the "ONLY". Is the Judging Guide correct that the word "ONLY" should be on the dome? Thanks - Mark Franken

Does anyone have an answer to Mark's question. I need to change mine too and I noticed the same thing in the JM. Should it have the "ONLY" on there or is the JM in error?

Lone Star sells both style caps and are what I use and sell at Carlisle. 90% correct or better is my guess. Their are lots of repos of this part and some are better than others. Unless the vendor sells both styles I would look elsewhere.

I agree with John, CSSB is a very good place to start. We bought an original cap for our 67 from them.
                        Good Luck!

Back in November I asked the following question:

"The 68-69 Technical Judging Guide says that for a 68 cover, the wording on one of the domes should be "USE DELCO BRAKE FLUID ONLY". I never received an answer and it appears no one wants to comment as to if the JG is correct or incorrect. So I'll go the other way. Someone please post a picture to show that a cap exists that says: USE DELCO BRAKE FLUID ONLY" on one of the domes.

                          Thanks

                          Mark

See Grant's original and repro 68 cap in the above photo. No "Only" on it.
