    Nice day for a drive

Upper 70s, sunny, perfect weather to put the top down and drive. And that I did today for an hour and thoroughly enjoyed the drive. The '70 LS-5 had a gentle, low rumble as it took on the road and it drove wonderful. Darn, I hated to have to drive it back home and park it back in the garage tonight but Thursday is forecast to be nearly 80 so out it comes and on the road again.

We got dumped on by several inches of snow today - far more than the "dusting" that was predicted.

Thankfully I have not yet seen any salt trucks on the road.

Very light snow last night by me, and again heavier, but brief snow this afternoon at work. Patrick, your side of the lake is supposed to get dumped on tonight. For you it will be 4WD time.

I hear Denver was in the high 70s today -- go figure.

I had the 4WD on tonight. Slidin' all over in those crappy tires that I only use for summer. Luckily I pulled my snow tires out of storage yesterday. Time to install!

FWIW, the place I went elk hunting last year in Montana is 45 degrees this week.

Snow is fairly rare here in this part of north central Texas. We get maybe one or two light to moderate sleet storms just after the first week of January and get a few days in the 30s and 40s but we average around 50-55 degrees in the Winter.

Snow? What is Snow? Oh ya I almost forgot. This week by us is heaven weather; mid to upper 60's (cold for central Florida) with perfectly clear skys all day, and upper 40's low 50's at night. I sure hope it warms up for the holidays, and specially for the winter meet in January. This is the time of year for our fun and Vette work - no sweat. Literally.

I consider California and Florida as ideal almost year long Corvette driving weather. I've been to San Diego but never anywhere in Florida. The Canadian cold fronts often push straight down north from Montana and drops down onto Texas but rarely is wide enough to get to California and Florida.

Today up near 81 in Pueblo. Here at 8K were to be in the low 70's today. Took Vette out Sun. to cruise Salida and up Monarch Pass 10k ft. Ski area's open mostly man made snow. Denver weather guy said well be warmer than Miami. But Not for LONG.

Same goes for the west to east frontal systems that push across Texas, Loiusiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Northern Florida and Georgia seem to mostly stay North of us even though we'd sometimes appreciate the rain. Guess we're like a "dingle berry" hanging down off the mainland to test the currents of the Atlantic and Gulf Of Mexico. I've seen cartoons showing our state bending west or east to get out of the way of the Hurricanes. Most times it works too - some years it don't (2004), Ouch!

Year around Vette driving weather here in Florida is Highly over rated. Summer months are just too hot for top down during the day, and we have T-storms most everyday from noon on. I seldom go out to a cruise if there is any chance of rain in the PM (that's most of the time). However, I take a drive often like on a Sunday morning when there is no weather and fewer screwballs on the road. Therefore, you don't mothball the car for the winter like up north, rather you keep it ready to go year round for those special times and days. This time of the year is the best, even though it may get chilly at night. I've often driven back from a cruise on the highway - top down and heater on!

First snow here in northeastern WI late yesterday afternoon. Salters out as roads glazed over due to freezing temps and wind. Too soon for me.

Re: Nice day for a drive

Stu, I have to admit that June-August are bakin' hot months here in Texas so I avoid driving top down in those months unless early in the morning or late afternoon.

But one has to admit that it is a grand experience driving a vintage Corvette on a nice, pleasant day. If one owns a '50, '60s, or '70s Corvette there are usually no others on the road with you. That makes it so unique. When families pass by with young kids in the car the kids heads whip around and then you see their faces gather in the back window, eyes wide. You know then that at east one of those kid's future dream car will be a Corvette. That was much like I was in the early '60s when I saw my first Corvette, a Roman Red one. I lived in a small town of 800 people where Corvettes were only seen on new car brochures.

When I drive my Corvette I almost always reflect on that day when I saw my first one. That makes the driving experience that much more enriching.

I whole heartedly concur. The only exception I found was when I had our dog with me. 10 years ago it was a charcoal colored Lasa and, when riding around town, he would be up looking around the wing window with his scarf blowing in the wind. Kids noticed him first. Our current dog is a wimp, but he still gets lots of attention. If I were still young and trolling for chicks, that would be the ticket I would use - Maybe paint the car red too.

A couple of weeks ago a friend was riding with me in the Corvette to go to my mechanic's to have work done on his steering column. Nice day, top down. We're both over 60 years old and look it. All two hairs blowing in the wind like a grasshopper on a windy day. I became aware of a car moving slowly up on the passenger side and then began keeping pace. It was a lovely young lady chatting on a cell phone while really scrutinizing the car. She seemed to be describing the Corvette to whoever she was chatting with never looking at us. Ahhh, once was the day when those young ladies looked at us and not the car. It is said that our cars are extensions of our personalities so in an indirect sense maybe she was "looking" at us. Nahhhhh.
