HI First find out what is the casting date of the motor, I would say that its a replacement motor no doubt about it. Some 65 cars had the 180 blocks but not having the vin or corvette assembly code, not happening! Phil 8063

      Hi Philip,

Where is the casting date on the 327 block located?

      Thanks!

        Andrew,

Look in the back of the motor on the boss just above the bellhousing, (drivers side)

            Re: Engine/Casting Help

Over the years, there were a handful of exceptions to the rule of SB Corvettes = Saginaw/Flint origin & BB Corvettes = Tonawanda origin. One of these execeptions is 1965 SB engines for a brief period of time. From the '65 JG book:

"A very limited number of blocks with casting number 3858180 appear in 1965. The casting origin is Tonawanda, New York and were apparently shipped to the Flint, Michigan, V-8 engine plant for machining and assembly."

Now, the engine you're talking about does NOT match the exception criteria. Why?

Well, the stamp pad documents that after the block was cast, it was ALSO assembled at Tonawanda (Txxyycode) and it lacks a Corvette VIN derivative stamp adjacent to the engine plant ID. This says, you're looking at a SB engine that was cast in Tonawanda and assembled there. It probably spent its prior life in a taxi cab, police car, or passenger car/truck originally manufactured in a GM plant on/near the East coast...

My first thought was a truck motor.
