    Offset: KO's vs. 5.5JK steel wheels

    In a previous thread on Z06's (small tank, it turns out) the subject strayed to factory wheelwell mod's for the big tank. Since this was far from the original topic, thought I'd re-post for those interested in KO's vs. steel wheels ('65-6; maybe '63-4, depending on their offset):
    --------------------------------
    I posted: (back in thread: link) https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...64795&uid=2604

    Since the KO's were 6" wide but had the same off-set (+0.44") as the 5_1/2" wide steel wheels, I think this means that wider tires would equally extend outwards and in"
    -------------------------------
    to which Duke W. Responded:

    NOT TRUE! You have to include the adapter for KO wheel offset, and when you do it's about +0.06 - same as the '67 Rally/bolt-wheels - so the circumferencial centerline of the tire is moved outboard about 0.38"
    ================================================== =====

    As usual, Duke is correct , so I thought I'd post a few pics to show what happens when you replace steel wheels ('65-6 JK's) with KO's.

    I mounted the hub-mating surface of the wheels on two identical paint cans (perfectly level).

    Pic #1 shows what I said in my first paragraph, without realizing the effect of the adapter (0.38" wide flange).

    Pic #2 is WITH the KO adapter in place (outer edge of rims is almost flush)

    Pic #3 same, but view of tire bead surface -- because aluminum casting / forging is thicker than steel, the inboard rubber moves approx. 1/16" outboard with the KO.

    Pic # 4 Outboard view, showing offset -- you can see why there might be wheelwell interference with 7.10 or 7.60 x 15 tires in jounce, and the need for shaved 1/4 panel lips with 36.5 gal cars.
