    Re: 71 Tires

Thanks for the replies. I just want to make sure I have this figured out. If I purchase the Kelsey tires I lose 3 points per tire for a total of 15 points. If I purchase radial street tires I lose 6 points per tire for a total of 30 points. In addition for every 100 miles I drive, I gain 45 points. Although I have done my best to get this car back as it was originally, not being a Corvette person, I am sure I missed somthing. My best bet may be the street tires, for the first showing, what do you think?

If you intend to drive the car, the minor point loss for use of modern radial tires is a drop in the bucket compared to their superior road handling characteristics you'll enjoy on the road vs. the factory original wide ovals...

        Frank:
I think you slightly misunderstood the responses. If you buy the Kelsey tires which are appropriate for your car you may (probably will) receive full credit. These are the most accurate of any out there. If you get F70-15 bias ply tires with the sidewall that was available when your car was produced but in the more available and less expensive Sup-R-Belt tire with 7 ribs not nine (as I did) the deduction would most likely be 3 points TOTAL (not per tire). That is 10% of the total points for tires (30). This tire was never installed on Corvette but was installed on may other cars of the day and as such repros can often be found slightly used at swap meets for a lot less than Kelsey's. Others may add to this or correct me if I gave you the wrong info. Other tires such as radials, other manufacturers that didn't supply Corvette, etc will get more severe deductions.

The standard deduction portion of the Judging Reference manual on page 21 and 22 outlines the tire deducts.
A car will lose 10% for the presence/absence of the DOT markings. Shark cars would lose 3 points at most in that case (10% of 30 originality points). The Kelsey reproductions have DOT markings as the originals did after 1969. 1968 had no DOT markings as I recall.
A car will lose 20% if you have an OEM brand but they differ "slightly" from original in design, construction, material, tread width, tread pattern, white(or colored) wall width, style lettering or pattern. (6 points)
A car would lose 30% if the tire is "considerably" insted of slightly(see above). (9 points)
The Kelsey RWL tires may get 10% deduct or no deduct at all because they are near exact reproductions. Remember, the judge must have a reason for the deduct.
The Firestone Sup-R-belt repro would get a 20% or 30% deduct depending on the judges interpertation of the Standard deduct Table.
