66 Power Steering Pump

Hey Guys ,

Which Power Steering pump is correct for my Small Block?

Notice the one which came off the car (right one ) has a slightly longer and bent to the right tube on the back. While the new rebuilt one (left Has A smaller and practically Straight Tube in the back.

Also the old one (right) has A lip around the base of the resovior, where it attaches to the main body.Ie. it looks like it sits on top off the body. Where as the rebuilt one (left ) is smooth, and looks like it fits into the body.

Lastly on the front , the old one has a ridge running the length off the snout on the top where the cover sits , While the new one has no ridge on the snout and no cover for that mater.

This is why I always pay a core charge , and return after inspection. For all I know though my original ----isn't.

The original pump is the one on the right. Although I can't see it very well in your photos, the one on the right appears to have a smaller pump shaft seal than the one on the left. The smaller seals were used for pre-67 pumps.

As far as the reservoir goes, I've NEVER seen one with a fill tube configuration like the one on the left. Is there some sort of plastic cap installed over the top?

So If I hear you correctly the" right one" with the lip around the resovior, where it attaches to the body, and the slightly bent to the right tube in the back are correct for my Mid- 66.

When did they make the Smooth Resovior Model with the straight Tube.

This style pump and reservoir were used from 1963-74. The correct pump for your application, the one on the right, was used for 65-66 and is GM #5693140 which includes reservoir GM #5692845. This reservoir was used for 64-66.

The pump on the left APPEARS TO BE a 67-74 style pump. However, I'm not sure it's even a Corvette pump. The Corvette pump assemblies were generally unique to Corvette applications. Among the features of them that were externally unique was the reservoir. However, many passenger cars of the 67-74 period used similar pumps and reservoirs and I just don't know what nuances varied between them. I do think, though, that the reservoir is a Corvette reservoir and of the 67-74 style, GM #5696997 OR SERVICE-only reservoir GM #7826727. Most likely, it's the latter.

There were SEVEN power steering pump assemblies used on Corvettes over the 63-74 period and these included THREE different reservoir assemblies. All are FUNCTIONALLY interchangeable AS A UNIT.

Seven huh! Its no wonder I am confused.

I checked some of the other vendors And they all seemed to be passing off the "smooth top - striaght tubed" version as the correct for Mid -Years.

I guess I will send it back and Have mine rebuilt .

Ther was an article qwritten recently either on this board or in the newsletter that described rebuilding the pump. It seemed simple to do. I think NAPA sells the rebuild kit. It involves the replacement of 3 "O" rings I think.
