    C3-1971 Photo of front grille

I'm refinishing the front grille's on my 71. I understand the groove around the parking light is suppose to be flat black. Does anyone have a close up picture that shows this area?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Here's one of my 70, which I think is correct.

Thanks Pat. Does the black go all the way around the parking light. I can't tell from the pic, but it looks like it stops. Thank you for sending.

It does stop, right where the front of the exposed egg-crate chrome stops. I copied the pattern that Richard Fortier used on some back-up grilles I have, and as I say, I think this is correct. I'm sure others will chime in with their opinion. Good luck.

          Hi Greg,
I don't quite understand ... are we saying that the grill is gray, but the 'groove' around the parking lens is black? I thought the whole grill was gray except for the upper 4 rows of the egg crate chromed edges, and the raised lines around the lens, which also show chrome.
          Thanks very much!
          Regards,

The groove is flat(-ish) black. Semi flat, maybe.
It's a little tricky to replicate and get it right.

Re: C3-1971 Photo of front grille

I used a Chromabase 2004 Charcoal Gray for the paintred grill area(s) and a flat/semi glaoss black for the groove that goes around the lense.
I sprayed a semi-flat clear on the gray paint. I took a NOS bumperette to the paint shop and had them take a picture of the paint.
Most all the repro/later NOS grills have to light of a gray on them.

              Everywhere else is chrome.

Took a LONG time to properly tape/mask the grill so it would look like original. They were more work than I could ever imagine.

                Patrick,

When you say "tricky to replicate and get it right", do you mean the shade of the black paint or where to stop the band of black paint around the parking light? Is the black suppose to go around the entire parking light? If not, where does it cut off?

                Thanks,
                Greg

Tricky to get the stop/start areas of the black correct.
My cars are not here so I can't tell you with 100% certainty the stop/start, and it's one thing I do not have a good picture representative in my collection.

As Patrick stated, the hue of the black is very close to the dark grey color of the grille. The small thin flat section between the raised chrome edging around the front signal lenses appears black, but this thin area runs into the grille surface towards the bottom on both sides, and looks more to blend into the dark grey color of most of the grille. It blends (fades?) more, than having a clear breaking line, demarcating the color change. It's definitely very subtle.
