    71 convert rear carpet install

Trying to figure out how to cut in the side peices of new carpet. Is there any detail on this, especially around the deck hinges. Thanks

If you have the old carpet you can lay it over the new and use it as a template to see where to trim.

        Vincent,

Rolph Kruger made detailed sketches of the rear carpeting, which is included in the latest 71 JM. They seemed to vary somewhat, but the idea is that they drop below the hinge joint to clear it. Reba Whitington suggested starting about 4 to 6 inches from the end.

Your vehicle may vary, as they say. Again, check the JM and they have a line drawing.

        Jim

The problem is you're asking for pix from essentially a BowTie car... Carpet is typically a high wear item that's either been replaced by prior owners or the current owner removed his original carpet and discarded it prior to documenting its geometry/fit.

That's why the current edition of the '70-72 JG book has hand drawn sketches of the detail you're asking to see. PLUS, I don't think ANYONE reproduces the rear compartment carpet correctly in terms of the geometry of its upper edge where it runs under the decklid hinge spring!

Those who restore and don't lose originality points in this area, hand-modify the reproduction carpet they buy. They remove the edge binding, hand-trim the carpet to achieve a correct or nearly factory correct 'tab' and re-bind it.

Re: 71 convert rear carpet install

Jack, in the past year, I have judged two cars with repro carpet that did have the correct cut and binding in the corners. I am thinking they said it came from Corvette America. I cannot confirm that, but I did ask if they had had the work done by a carpet shop, and the answer was no.

Has winter set in for you yet?

                  Vincent--
It's probably time to buy the manual. None of us here mind helping, but always are more willing to help when it's obvious that the person inquiring has already done his/her homework.
I have a 30k mile 71 LT-1 3-star convertible that can be of help to you. For the winter is has become somewhat inaccessible, but I'm willing to help however I can.
                  Regards,
                  Mike

My low-mile car is No. 21653---also have 71 LT-1 convert #4215, not nearly as original--carpet replaced long ago, and done poorly.

                        MIke,

Did you ever receive my e-mails regarding my question on your 3-Star LT-1 car?

                          Patrick--
Thanks for reminding me--it came while I was gone, and I forgot to respond to it. I'll try to get out to the barn this week and see what I can do about a pic--I saw if the first time from underneath, and won't be able to get back underneath until spring. I'll see if I can get something from the top. Keep reminding me!

                            No problem.
Thanks for your assistance - in advance.

I know what you mean about having it put away - my Bowtie 72 sits several miles form my house and I only can get at it on occasion.
Now that winter is coming here in Michigan I won't see it until April.
