    Engine Winter storage

I realize it's a big no-no to NCRS members to add GM dealer accessories but my 55 has the original Carter engine heater which I connect in the winter months that keep the engine moister free and helps keep the dew off the other parts by the radiant heat that the engine gives off. By the way it also has the battery warmer for better cold starts . I just love GM accessories that work and make my Corvette one of a kind in NCRS!

    Roy,

I wonder how well it would work in say Fargo, ND?

Sure am glad ya got plenty of money to donate to your local electric utility. The smallest heater I have seen will draw the same amount of electricity as 3 1/2 100W light bulbs, on up to one of the larger, 15 100W light bulbs.

Any one owning a Corvette can afford the electric bill, it's only money when it comes to our cars

Back in the early sixties while in the Air Force I was stationed in north eastern Maine where it would get 30 below quite often. I had a 340 HP 62 and without the block heater it wouldn't start. Some guys used sterno cans under the oil pan to thin the oil. I thought that was pretty scarey so used one of these. Still have an NOS one just in case. Rich

The last 4 cars we ordered, we ordered the engine block heater and glad we did if nothing else for peace of mind when up north or cold windy nights here. ('Garage is reserved for Corvettes, parts and tools as it was meant to be.) They are inexpensive and always did the job. A previous neighbor put a shop light with 100W bulb under his pan. He found out he had a leak when his neighbor told him about the smoke.

Block heater makes a *huge* difference in the cold weather start-up of a Diesel (that I use to tow my Corvette (see, Corvette related!) that can't be street driven). No waiting for the glow-plug light to go out and the heater is blowing warm air almost immediately. Yes, it uses a lot of electricity, but the cost is often worth it.

I once used a G.I. blanket and Top Coat on my 58 Fuelie engine to keep the unit (F.I.) warm. If 2 degrees below, it wouldn't start. 2 degrees above and it would. That was only in Sunny Wisconsin. Sure glad I don't have to be concerned about things like that anymore here in Florida.
