Ballast resistor "hole" on T.I. (K66) C2 cars

    Members,
I have read several postings on the issue that Wayne has brought up. I would like to conduct a survey. Please take a picture of this area on T.I. cars where the ballast resistor would be and forward to danyoung67@rcn.com . Also answer a few questions:

    1) to the best of your knowledge, is your car restored or pretty original?

    2) what is the vin number of your car?

    3) A.O Smith or St Louis?

I will log all of the responses and share with the group after getting
    sufficient responses.

What about "NO ballast resistor" C2 cars (K66)
Interesting thread (link below) on firewall ballast resistors, but what about "resistor delete" cars ? The '65 AIM offers no co-ordinates for factory drilling the resistor bracket mounting hole, as they do for all other firewall clip holes. Was there a target dimple in the fiberglass ? Any difference between A and S-body panels ? The '65 TIM&JG says T.I. cars "do not have any evidence of a hole in the firewall".

Can someone post a close-up pic of this area (say, covering a 3" x 4" zone) of an unmolested T.I car (no fill and feather jobs, S.V.P.)

    Wayne -

Responses to this should be interesting - there are no references either in the Chevrolet Assembly Manual or in the much more comprehensive A.O. Smith process sheets for drilling a hole for the sheet metal-type resistor screw on a standard car, nor are there any instructions for filling an existing hole with bond material on a K-66 car (like there are for filling the expansion tank bracket rivet holes on a big-block).

    Hi Dan
I like one of the questions that you raised.
Are we sure there were K-66 bodies from A. O. Smith, or, like BB's were the K-66 cars STL only?
Good Luck and keep us posted.

K-66 was available with the L-79 engine in '67, and those bodies could have come from either source; all the other '67 K-66 applications were for big-blocks, so they'd be St. Louis-bodied.

Mike -- I'm sure that big block T.I. car bodies (or that eventually had K66 installed at St.Louis) were produced at Ionia MI, for the 1965 and '66 model years. Ref. RESTORER, Vol 6, # 3 (winter 1980) where there are pics of a conv. with the '65-6 BB hood being wet-sanded and sprayed [these may also appear in Noland's Vol 2].

I'll check my close-by buddy's '66 L72 to see if A-body and report. (same guy that I got the N14 side cover J-nut from -- previous link attached; got no response to that one .)

Wayne and Mike. Since A. O. Smith produced '65 L78 cars, and all L78 cars were TI, then A. O. Smith must have produced bodies with no ballast resistors.

John, does this mean that if I have a 67 st louis body (vin 9815 ) with the evidence of a TI ( holes on the inner fender for the TI , clip under the male hood latch , and the pilot hole on the firewall ) that it must have been a BB ? I do have other confirmations that it should of been a BB.
My old wiring harness has no pink wire at the location of the ballast resistor so shouldnt the replacement wiring harnesses be the same ? Replacement engine harness by Lectric limited has a pink wire at the location of the ballast resistor. thanks Del

You must get the TI extention harness to "convert" a new engine harness for TI. I'm not aware of anybody making one ready to go for it right out of the box.
