    Horn Overhaul Kits?

In the Spring '00 Restorer Joe Sikora had an article on horn overhaul/repair. He alluded to a repair kit with gaskets and rivets. Does anyone know where you can get these kits if at all?
    Thanks,
    Sully

I saw a kit on Ebay. I am not sure if it is the correct rebuild kit for a C1.

The kit includes the rivets, gaskets and some part I'm not sure what it is. But when you get into the clam how do you fix the diaphram. I confess I have never seen inside a horn.

          Hi,

I just purchased the horn rebuild kits to rebuild my 1961 horns. I am hoping to get to them next week.

          Regards,

          Dennis

Dennis - Where did you get your kit from? I just went to ZIP on Kenneth's advice and they have kits that furnish gaskets and rivets and what looks like a tool of some kind.
Do you know if your kit contains the diaphram? I haven't opened mine up yet but at 50 years I think diaphrams may be a good bet.
            Thanks - Sully

              Sully,

I ordered the kit from Zip Products. The package contains gaskets, rivets, and a contact file. I mainly ordered the kit for the rivets. I didn't want to spend a lot of time looking for rivets that were close to the originals.

let us know how it works out. I am interested in doing the same with my set of horns.

Chicago Corvette lists a rebuild kit in their catalog (No. A3085 @ $52.50, confirm price & availability because things change from time to time). The description indicates '58-62 applicable with rivets, metal diaphram, gaskets, diaphram stud & directions... One kit does two horns.

Ron Goralski rebuilt my 62 horns recently for around $75-$85. I believe he is a member. Did great work.

                      Bob,
Horn rebuild kits are available from most of the Corvette vendors. I think I purchased mine from Corvette Central, or maybe it was LI. I have attached a link to the write up I did on rebuilding my '65 horns. It may offer some help.

Having rebuilt quite a few horns in times past, you are way ahead by sending them to someone like Ron. They are "easy" to rebuild, but a b***h to get to sound right. After you have it apart about three times you will see what I am talking about.

No I do not rebuild horns for anyone, including me!

Thanks a lot guys for all the great advice.
Rob - Your article is great and I agree with the last paragraph. Doing the work yourself has great rewards. However, Dick's sage advice is worth taking into concideration.
I think I will go to the junk yard and procure a guinea pig to experiment on before opening up my originals.
                          Thanks again - Sully

Ron is the man. He just rebuilt a 352 horn for me and it goes parmp parmp !!!! He does a great job. Just give it to him it will save a lot of hassle.

I used to use Corvette Central's "deluxe" rebuild kits which included diaphragms. Then they discontinued it.

Now I use the bottom of a coffee can for the diaphragm. It works great for me. My horns go: :aarrooooooga, aarroooooooga!

I haven't tried Zip's version of the "dee luxe" kit, yet:

it looks just like the one from CC.
I made up a super-duper buck to reproduce the waffle pattern on the rivets. The critical part, is that both mating flanges must be DEAD FLAT!!!!! The diaphragm must NOT BE DISTORTED IN ANY WAY!!!!!!!! Once assembled, it's just a simple matter of adjusting the amplitude of the coil's travel.

I might try to rig up a PTO to run a compressor, so that my horns will go: faaaaaaaannnnnfhhh, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnfhhh!
