    Newbie 54 Pennant Blue Member

This is my first post as a member so be gentle. I am restoring a Pennant Blue 54 and have the body stripped to fiberglass. I never dreamed that finding the correct color code and type of paint would be so difficult. I did some research that led me to GM 620 Metallic Blue Poly and GM 570 Shoreline beige. Then I found the 12/7/07 post from Brett Henderson that calls for Dupont GM 233 and Dupont B8872a code 57.
The local paint shops don't recognize these codes and want the year, make, and model they were on which leads us back to blue poly.
Does any one know what the paint color code is and where it can be purchased?

        Thanks Roy.
Is there an authority on 54 paint colors in modern paint availability,or since there are so few, do we just do the best we can since these cars never had a paint code attached to them? Pennant Blue is my first choice since that was the original color, but is difficult to track down. Black or red, since it is easier to obtain, would be good too.

Since you have one of those rare colors does anyone disput it?

        Thanks again

You need to locate people that have a blue 54 Corvette and ask them that got a top flight or higher award . It's the metallic flake used that can change the tint (color) .
No one has questioned my copper color and try to mach it or ask me.
I think we'll see more copper 55's down the road then GM sold 15.It happened many years ago when my 57 Cascade green Corvette was on the front page of the restorer

Dupont ltr dtd Feb 5, 1954 calls out the code (then called 'Metallic Blue') for "Duco" as 202-57797. The same letter assigns 202-57794 to "Metallic Beige.
It also states that the four metallic colors are effective "Beginning with March, 1954, production schedules, at least implying that until then your exterior colors were limited to Polo White, Black and Sportsman Red.
(The same information is published on February 17, 1954 in Dupont's "Advance Automotive Color Information, Advance bulletin # 15-A.
A later letter from W.G. Mohr in Oakland, dated May 21, 1954 calls out NEW code # for Metallic Blue as 1927.

Dennis, welcome to the TDB. I'm sure that you will find the resources for restoring your 54 nearly endless. A couple tips: be patient when posting questions. There aren't many of us left that watch this board, and sometimes takes some days for us to "catch up" to answer the posts. Also, please make use of the archives. Chances are your question has already been posted by others, and the answer is likely there.

I finished the full resto of my Polo White 54 last year. I've owned the car 19 years, and finally found the time to do. If you need pix or advise feel free to post or email me and I'll try to help.

As to the paint, I would research your car to be absolutely certain of the original color, and then paint it that color. My car was once black, and I was excited to possibly restore it as a black car. Upon researching with a former owner, I discovered that it was a Polo White car.

If you can find an orginal '54 Corvette chip then you can try to match that chip as close as possible.

Greetings ! I just finished a '54 pennant blue , was Top Flighted several weeks ago at 98.6%. There is no chip from '54 on Pennant Blue , it is a blue poly in acylic lacquer . The chip most use is a '57 chip. The tan you use is autumn bronze. I can help you if you would like to get in touch with me......Steven........

Sorry for the late reply but I just saw your post to my question about Pennant Blue paint codes. I am very interested in any painting info as I have just soda blasted my 54 and am need to finish.
                        1. Did you strip to glass?
                        2. Did you use lacquer?
                        3. What base coats did you use?
                        4. Did you clear coat?
                        5. do you have paint codes and brands?
I would like to get as much info that you have since I did not get a lot of responses with info that worked out. I would prefer a phone conversation or meet if you are available.
                        Thanks again.

                          Dennis:

www.corvettepaintcodes.com has the paint codes you seek. However, as others have stated, the metallic size and content is the big issue. Test panels will likely be needed to get it right, unless Steve can supply all the required mixing info and contacts/suppliers etc.

                            Nothing to add except:

                            1. I wish my 54 was blue. I've always loved that color combo.
                            2. WELCOME Dennis!

Glad to have another 53-55 member on the discussion board.
