    Times are tough all over

    Sorry, I digress. I got a chuckle out of this, hope you will also.
    OK, I'm in Chicago, 75 degrees, sunny, unseasonably gorgeous San Jose kind'a day, eating lunch outside of Micky D's. What pulls up into the drive through? the Biggest, Blackest, Newest Rolls Royce I've ever seen. Oh Well!

    You must be in Downtown Chicago.
    ...it might have been Oprah needing a "French Fry Fix".

      What, Mike -- you missed the party last night? Probably some of the celebrity celebrators just catching breakfast after an all-nighter. Times are tough only for most of us. Think they make more than 250K a year?

        Oh! What party was that? Being a former Chicago area resident, I usually know what is going on. But I'm out of the loop on this one. Do you mean the one in Grant Park? the gathering of 500,000 Bolsheviks celebrating the establishment of the new U.S.S.A? (United Socialist States of America). You mean that one?

        One thing of note on that is that every Pledge and Promise uttered during the Campaign were withdrawn in one simple speech. The crowd looked stunned when they learned they may still have to work. They had no idea what they were celebrating. Duhhhhh!

        This should be fun to watch over the next four years.

            I missed going to the Grant Park rally last night, looked like a pretty big crowd. But I think the crowd I was with in 1968 was just a little bit LARGER than last night and maybe a little bit more active. Same last name of the mayor though.

              Can you imagine what would have happened if the election would have gone the other way? Da Mayor would a had a REAL party on his hands! One that would have made 1968 look mild. I wonder if they were prepared for that?

              I know I would not have wanted to park my Vette anywhere near downtown last night. No cruise in, no parade, no siree!

                Couldn't agree with ya more. I don't recall seeing any corvettes there more than 40 years ago, but then again, I really don't remember much of that weekend at all. Other then just a hellva lotta people.

                  Martin;

                  I'm sorry I missed out on those days. Can you imagine; I was in the Army down at White Sands thinking I would spend the rest of my enlistment there so I ordered my 63 in April, picked it up on home leave to Wisconsin in August, then came down on levie to SEA and had to leave it behind in November. I got back in a year and a half before big bad 65, then foolishly went back to work on contracts through 1971. So I missed out on a lot of the best of the muscle car era and much of the transition from C- 2 to C - 3. Somewhere in the middle of all that I also got married and my twin sons were born. Had a ball with them in the Vette as long as they both fit on the passenger seat with one seat belt. With the 63, you could adjust the seat higher too, which they liked.

                  My fun days were down on the border (WI/IL) back in late 50's early 60's when we had huge crowds out in the boonies to watch our street drag events (Kilbourne Road). Kept getting bigger and bigger until the Lake County Sheriff decided we had to stop.

                    Had a 69 Z-28 that I used to go up to Great Lakes Dragwayin WI. all the time with (wish I had that car now!) and remember them lowering the drinking age to 19, WOW! That was somethin' else. I wonder now-a-days that I'm still alive!

                    Go up to Lake Geneva now, we're only 40 minutes from there and often take the 74 convertible on a nice trip, just a beutiful ride.

                        Steven;

                        Really! Were you experiencing Hell on Earth!? Were you in Iraq? Did you loose your job, your house, wife, or your Vette? Truely, the first 6 of 8 were very good years, or until Congress Changed Hands.

                        I really don't care personally. In my retired status and on fixed income, I stand to gain if this fellow follows through on some of his grandiose plans, specially the wealth redistribution. In fact, I ecourage everyone in the upper income brackets to send their money directly to me to eliminate the middle men so I can do some more upgrades on my Vette.

                        Just send me a Private Message and I'll send you my address.

                          Stuart:

                          I'm not going into how great the first 6 years were-we can observe for ourselves how great they were by the results of the 2006 midterm elections and what happened Tuesday night-people wanted change because they didn't like the way things were going. There is much more to quality of life in this country than whether I lost my job or wife or car or whether I was in Iraq. No, I wasn't in Iraq, but I know people who were and as a political writer living just two miles from the White House, I see everyday what people from all walks of life are feeling and thinking. I'm not going to regurgitate all the problems. I am an environmentalist at heart and I haven't been happy for the past 8 years. If you don't agree, that's why we live here, but to me, destroying the environment is hell on earth! Along with a trillion dollar deficit, one of two wars we shouldn't be in and an energy policy that achieved nothing except expand the wealth of the oil companies. That is all my "hell on earth." To you, it may be related to something else. You've obviously enjoyed the last two terms of Pres. Bush and that's great for you. I disagree. My view of what is good and bad is far more expansive than whether I was in Iraq or not or whether I lost my vette. I have small kids and my values are on a grander scheme-so that we have something to leave them in 20-30 years besides a huge debt and a destroyed environment and a country despised around the world. You want to call the new administration a bunch of socialists, that's your choice. But I have other names for the current group of thieves.

                            Guys -- I took this thread in the political direction -- and I shouldn't have done that. I am very sorry.

                            One of the things that makes this country great is that we can all have different beliefs and still more or less get along, and one of the better features of NCRS is that we concentrate on Corvettes and generally don't discuss politics or religion or any of the other concepts that drive people apart. We may have differences of opinion about the finish or configuration of a certain part -- or whether we prefer one year Corvette or another -- but so long as we stick to Corvettes we can usually get along.

                            Let's stick to Corvettes.

                              Terry, Steven and all that watched this thread,
                              I can understand what each of you expressed and yes, this should be about Corvettes.
                              We all come from different perspectives and outlooks based on our personal experinces, but still the great thing about this country is that with each of our personal / political differences, we can all agree about the love of these cars.
