Lenny, your question is reasonable however it is all but unanswerable.

The cost of rebuilding an engine depends on how you define "rebuild", what condition the engine is in when you start, what parts you replace out of need, what parts you replace out of desire, the machine work you opt to have done or not done, how much of the assembly labor you do yourself.

If you are more fortunate than I've ever been you might escape with a bill in the several hundred dollar range. More likely, you ought to budget for an expense of several thousand dollars.

    Good luck,

    Jim

If the block is in good condition and you replace all the internals you would probably be in the $3500.00 range. This of course does not include the install and removal of the block form the car and no hot rod parts for the engine.

        Leonard,

Take the time to read as much in the archives as you can about rebuilding your 327, this will save you $$$. No need to deck the block as you will erase #'s or mill heads so be careful of the machine shop. Don't let them turn that nice forged crank unless there is a problem. Use all stock parts and a stock cam and measure piston deck clearance so you can select a head gasket that's going to yield good compression ratio.

Read info in archives about old 327 rods as this is one area you may want to at least upgrade to the late 66-67 rods. There is more metal thickness around the bolt boss on the later rods (see pic) Get your info before tearing into the engine and don't buy any hot rod parts, you will save $$$

          Leonard,

I can't speak directly to a 327 rebuild, but I have had a 427 done recently. It was $2800.00 for having the machine shop do the short block. Having the heads done (including installing the valve train) was $1000.00. It depends on your goals. Are you going to restore the engine? In other words, are you going to have the accessories restored and the engine painted to NCRS specs? That will cost quite a bit more.

          Joe

In my humble opinion, this is excellent advice. Ridge.

Lowest cost at the local hillbilly place = $1250, not including the head work.
