    Judging Catagory Question

This is what I have: I am the second owner for two years of a 65 vert. I have 41 years of documents from the original owner. This includes bill of sale, dealership paperwork and Indiana inspection reports that document milage for every year. The car has 79,000 miles now. When I took possession the car it had the original radiator hoses. However the car was repainted which I believe removes it from the survivor catagory. In the two years I have replaced hoses brake lines, body mounts, ball joints, rear end cushions and other wear items. Where and how do I enter the judging arena?

    Re: Judging Catagory Question

    Hi Ray,
Take to a local chapter event. Just clean and drive. Meet lots of people who can help, you get a base line on the car, find out what's still original and do not get upset if you loose lots of points for condition.
    Most of all have fun.

Survivor (TM) is an award issued by Bloomington Gold. NCRS judges basically original cars for the Star/Bowtie Award. The rules for each are different, and in your case that difference is significant.

      To cut to the chase:
NCRS requires 70% original paint to pass the exterior portion of the Star/Bowtie judging. The four areas of judging (Interior, Exterior, Chassis, Mechanical) require 80 or 85% (depends on the area) factory original items to pass. You have already failed the exterior portion with the repaint; so the best you can do in this category is 3 Stars. The parts replacement to the chassis may/may not be a factor. The only way to know for sure is to go for it. NCRS Star/Bowtie judging also requires an affirmative vote of the judges/Team Leader. That is the part of this judging that proves most difficult.

Bloomington gold requires 50% factory originality in three of the four areas judged. Thus your repaint will not knock the car out of the Survivor (TM) Award. The Undercarriage (basically the same as Chassis in NCRS) work you have done will probably not be a factor since it doesn't sound like 50% of that area. Undercoating is usually the kiss of death for the Undercarriage in Bloomington Gold Judging, although significant corrosion can also be a factor.

There is much more on the NCRS Star/Bowtie judging process in the NCRS Judging Reference Manual. Bloomington Gold provides an Owner's Advisory about their Survivor Judging standards. Call their office. The number is available by searching Bloomington Gold in your on-line search engine.

        Re: Judging Catagory Question

To add to what Terry said, Star/Bowtie qualifying now requires judging at a regional meet before the team leader okays it.

Go for it. A car that is now 40+ years old and original in any area deserves to be seen and rewarded.

          Hi Ray,
I read your interesting post about your 65.
I, too, would encourage you to take your car to a Chapter (local) Judging Meet. People will be glad to meet you and see your car. Having it Flight Judged will give you a good idea where you car is strong (and weak) on originality and condition.
Are you a member of a Chapter? If not you should really consider joining one. Since you're in N.Y., I'd bet there's one close to you.
          Regards,
          Alan
