    C-3 jack

Did 1969-1971 jacks have an 'I' stamp for a date? Is a 1D jack okay for an October 1971 built 1972 Corvette?

    Thanks,

    My January 1970 has a jack dated 9M -- for December 1969.

Terry, my March 1970 Corvette has an 0B jack. It is nice that we have jacks that are that close to the build dates of our Corvettes. However, by NCRS judging standards will a 1D jack pass in a 1K Corvette w/o points deduct?

My 70's original jack has 0 E. Build month was early July 1970.

i have seen them 3 or 4 months older than the build date. i would bet your jack would pass. you get 6 months on a block...

The rule of thumb on MOST (but NOT all) dates is 6-months. I posted the date on my jack to illustrate the original question about the use of the letter I for the month -- not to start a debate about how close to production the date should be.

BTW: My car is January 29 (almost the end of the month) on the trim tag. The jack doesn't tell us when in December it was made -- it could have been early in the month, and so could have been almost two months out. And yes, it could have been less. We will never know.

I think we had one at Waco last month that got credit for a jack dated the same month as the car; however, the car was built the last week of the month.

April is unlikely in an October car, but not impossible.

Adding on to Terry's comment...the general rule is items that were dated via manual stamping, typically exclude the letter 'I' for a month code. Those that were dated via emboss (changing an insert in the mold or casting die), typically DID use the letter 'I' for a month code.

Perhaps it's the result of skilled labor level used between the two different methods (took a qualified machinst to work on molds/dies). But, that's the typical story regardless of why the difference exists.

Going back to what Terry said about his jack having an 'M' indicating a December manufacture date, the impact is you can't have December=M without skipping the use of a prior letter in the alphabet, namely 'I' to count up to the 12th month...

The jack you have was an April build and your car is an October build. The April jack could have been made April 1st to the 30th so it fits the six month rule and should get full credit no matter when in October your car was built. Most jack dates are within three months but yours meets the standard.
