    Performance Verification Tires Question

On page 11 of the 1984-1989 Corvette Operations Manual & Performance Verification Test Guide (First Edition) the second paragraph states:

"The car must be equipped with the original-type and size of radial construction tires as specified with the original option content. The use of other types disqualify the car from testing. The appropriate year wheels and center caps or correct optional wheels as originally produced by the manufacturer must be in place."

I do not have driveable versions of the original Goodyear Eagle VR P255/50VR-16 tires. I have recent Goodyear HP Ultra Plus 255/50-16 tires, which score a 60% deduction as what page 63 of the 1984-1986 Corvette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide (First Edition) lists as:

"Current day OEM brand, service replacement size, bias or radial ply tires or current equivelant sizing designation"

With all that said, will I be able to use my current tires in a performance verification?

    Re: Performance Verification Tires Question

    John,

    Yes.
Current Eagle "Gatorbacks" are no longer available in P255/50R-16, and the available 245's are Z rated only. In light of this, and the fact that speed ratings have been modified/realigned since 1985, where Z rated tires are now further subdivided into W and Y subsets, I would think that the fact that your Z rated tires would be considered the same "type" as the original "VR50 Gatorbacks".
The manufacturer, size, load rating are all same as original. Their radial construction certainly qualifies them as: "..............the original-type and size of radial construction tires as specified with the original option content.........."

It looks to me like those are the same type tires and would not be a problem.

Thanks, folks - I didn't want to go through all the preparation for a PV and than fail before the test actually begins...

          John,
I am in no position to advise you, and I don't wish to appear to criticize the advice you have been given; however I would suggest you get in touch with the appropriate Team Leader for the definitive answer to your question. Contact information for the team leaders is on the page that comes up from the "contacts" button at the top of the home page. Give him a call. If you are going for the PV you will want to get to know him anyway.

            Terry,

Thanks, as always. I'm definitely going to get (back) in touch with Allen, but I trying not to bother him any more than necessary...

By the way, I don't know how I put a 63/64 next to this post...

Allen is a very nice guy -- he won't mind. Answering questions is part of the TL job. I know he and all the other TL would rather have the tire conversation before you travel to the PV than after.
