    1967 Voltage

What is the correct reading on the amp gauge at idle on a 427/435 car? I think it is just over 0 to the positive. What is wrong if it is closer to +20?

    Thanks

A "normal" reading is within "0" and 1 needle width to the positive side of "0". However, there are times when it will normally run much more positive than that. For instance, after starting a lot of current is drained from the battery so the charge rate will be much higher than "normal".

If the needle runs considerably to the positive side of "0" almost always, that indicates that there is some electrical problem. It might be a defective voltage regulator (in which case you'll also probably find yourself adding water to the battery a lot), some other sort of electrical problem which is causing a high current load, or other things.

Jeremy, does it stay a +20, or does it slowly return to 0 or just a bit above? If it drops, that's telling the battery needed a little charge, and all is well. Bill.
