    K & N air filter 1974 L-48

    I bought a new K & N air filter ( model E-1500) for a L-48 1974 .
The carborator stud is way too short now. Is this the right air filter?
Or do I buy a longer on at the local hardware store. Thankyou

    GUENTER-

There has been several posts regarding the air filter height and at what time they did the change. You should have an AC DELCO A329C which is 12" in diameter by 2 1/4" tall. The A348C AC DELCO air filter is 12" in diameter and 3 3/8" tall which is probably what you're working with and is too tall. Can you give us the build date of your car? Mine is a L-48 convertible built on / around April 10, 1974

I recommend you do yourself an favor in the form of an archive search on K&N filters.

            GUENTER-

You should be looking at the shorter of the 2 air filters; A329C for your application. The change in question didn't come into play until mid to late 1974.

Like Duke asked why do you want to go with the K&N brand when all it is, is a bunch of hype? A regular paper air filter will cost you 5 times less and provide the same protection.

              Dear Marty and Duke,

I thought K & N air filters were superior to AC Delco. I believed the hype. Plus , I had a 10 dollar coupon off the sale price. 36 dollars for the air filter. Thanks for your comments,Guenter

One of the major magazines did a flow test on a filters they tested a 50+dollar K&N vs. a box filter like AC Delco Fram Purolitar, they all flowed just as much as the high dollar K&N filters. Save your money

OMG! 36 bucks? If it's still new, take it back. They are definitely NOT superior.

As others have advised, forget the K&N. From a performance perspective, it won't do anything of any significance for you. However, if you wish to be "environmentally sensitive" or "green", it might be a smart choice. These filters are designed to be re-used many times, rather than just thrown away. Over time, this MIGHT even save you a few bucks, but it won't be much.

However, cleaning and re-oiling these filters is a PAIN. WAY more involved than just replacing a Delco paper element.

I have had my engine oil tested in my driver cars (mostly 1995 Caprices with LT1 engines). I was getting excess silicon in the oil which went back to normal when I replaced the K&N filters with ACDelco paper filters.
Not only do the K&N filters not increase horsepower, but in my case they allowed excess dirt to enter the engine. I believe that is a negative.

I have a oil filter that I am working on that will increase horsepower, just like the K&N you wash it out and reuse it.

Overpriced junk! Do you want to do a dirt rebore to the top of your cylinders? Search the archives. This subject has been fully vetted. I wouldn't put a K&N in any car I own if you paid me five hundred bucks.

AND... they don't make "more power" according to a test in Hot Rod Magazine of all places. You can find that article on their web site.

Go to www.baldwinfilter.com and cross the correct OE Delco number if you want quality. Wix, Purolator, and Delco are okay. Avoid Fram.

A quality cellulose filter is about ten bucks. Follow the GM recommended change interval, which is typically about 30K miles
