    Big Brakes = Big Bucks

For those that may not have seen it, a complete big brake package from a C-1 closed on ebay yesterday for $13,600.

The complimentary quick steering adapter by the same seller fetched $657.

That these parts, especially the brake system, survived intact and with very little wear is amazing. Does anyone know the story behind the car from which these parts are removed?

Re: Big Brakes = Big Bucks

I read in some of the questions and answers on his ebay page that the system came off of a 57'. My guess is someone bought a complete over-the-counter big brake kit at the local Chevy dealership (although it's the later RPO687 stuff) and put it on this car to race it way back in the day OR it was put on many years later to fool someone into believing that it was a genuine big brake 57'. That poor guy would of had to of been unfamilar with the differences between early/later big brake stuff. Just my guess. I wonder what its going on now? It would be extremely easy to counterfeit a plain Jane into a RPO 687 car.

Its been going on w 69 Z's for years. Add JL8 brake system whalla 100K plus car. Also cross-ram set up on a Z - 302, will create the same affect. (Was a dealer option add on) So along with sm block Vettes morphed into BB cars. The sharks are workin overtime.

Some have traded privately for way more bucks than that Roy. Add a set of 5 1/2" wheels and $30k for a '58 setup is about the going rate

John Hinckley pointed me at this website that does a very thorough job of explaining the differences. Thanks, John!

True enough Jay, but the repro crossrams are detectable. Lots of fake 69 Z's showed up at BJ earlier this month. Many bidders just don't take the time to perform adequate due diligence only to discover a surprise later.

WOW! But years ago I was offered 40K for my green bubble top only, from a name Corvette dealer back East.
                    Crazy world out there!!

Now theyre pushin pre-X code cars Sept-Dec early 68 as true Z's. Next all Nan Nuys and Los cars will morph into Z's and BB 396 cars. Altho its I think its already happening.

When we had the Z28 restored we were able to purchase a service JL8 package (expensive) - I understand that the service package is visually different from factory. Therefore anyone that has even the slightest knowledge isn't going to be fooled. What a difference it makes when you put your foot on the brake pedal.

Jay the first gen, and to some extent, early second gen, Camaro world is really, truly, like the Wild Wild West. The fraud, chicanery and obfuscation is epidemic. This explains why Jerry MacNeisch is so busy.

I don't believe Podell's parts have sold yet but, if memory serves, he wants $20,000 for the 24 gal. NOS tank and originally asked $50,000 for the Mickey Thompson block (not Corvette, though).
