    1972 AM/FM Radio Repair ---

Does anyone know whare I can get my radio worked on?

I found out this week at Waco that when the AM/FM selector is moved, the station numerical display is not flipping back and forth.

Congratulations Bill on driving your 72 from TLH to ACT and receiving another Top Flight. Have not had a radio repaired, there are some postings in the archives within the past few months of radio restoration persons.

I used D & M Restoration, who advertises in the Driveline, for the restoration of my 70 radio and was very happy. My radio was not very clear, and was barely loud enough at full volume to hear music with the top down. It now plays loud and clear, both AM and FM.
The mechanism that rotates the AM/FM numbers is fairly simple and can be accessed once you take the glass cover off (you'll have to take the radio out to do this ). If you can catch both AM and FM, and the rotation of the numbers is the only problem, you may be able to fix it yourself. Otherwise, I'd recommend D & M. Good Luck.

          Hi Pat,
Could you give me an idea of about what your repair cost? Thanks!
          Regards,
          Alan

Alan, as I recall it was about $200, but it may have been slightly more. In any event, I was very happy with it. In fact, for my PV, when I had it on an AM station, the judge said, "that's good. In fact, that's very good". And even with the top down, it's loud and clear. And it's just as good to this day, about 2 years later.

I just rejoined the group after a long absence Bill and was catching up on radio related questions. It's been a while since your message was written to the forum but if you didn't get the string back on that dial drum and want help, I can guide you through it. There are a couple of tricks that make it pretty easy.

I'm the guy that's been doing virtually all of D&M's, ZIPs and various other shops radios for the last 7 years. (Jerry ducks... ) Holler if I can help... it's my second hobby right next to opening all 4 barrels on a BB.

                Jerry,

                Thanks for the post -

I ended up buying a am/fm core radio and taking the number drum unit out and swapping into my radio. It has excellent numbers and coloring.

Well done Bill! It's one of those jobs that looks intimidating until you've done it once (without losing the spring).

If you ever have to replace the drum string, Antique Electronic Supply has some dial cord that will never wear out or rot. You'll need to adjust the spacing of the "U" on the AM/FM selector arm using the inset notch to center the dial drum numbers vertically in the window. Piece of cake...

                  Cheers! _Jerry_
