    72 Heater Core (w/AC)

    Hello to all ...
Since becoming a member ('06) this site has answered several newbie questions however, my original owner garage mistress has taken it's toll.
The heater core started leaking a week before Carlisle this past August and the speedometer cable twisted itself to ruins on the way back. Over the past few weeks several parts are here and more are coming to keep her running. They include; heater core, hoses, speedocable, clock (quartz upgrade) and finally the need for a radio repair recommendation.
If anyone wishes to grab an item I'm all ears.
    Thanks in advance.

You will find the heater core installation for a 1972 with C-60 to be "interesting". Allow plenty of time for the job. Also, be sure that you have the heater core installation parts from Dr. Rebuild as you will find some of the soft items in need of replacement.

Make sure you do the clock and radio repair as part of the overall heater core job as the center instrument cluster and radio will need to be removed as part of the heater core R&R. So, that's when it's most efficient to take care of them.

      Richard,

Just remember that you'll lose a fair amount of Operations points for the quartz clock if you ever have the car judged.

In Flight Judging, the line item for the clock under the operations section is divided:

        "Clock & reset function"

with 25 points associated with that line item. Some judges (generous ones) only take a partial deduction for the presense of a clock 'restored' with a quartz movement because it DOES 'reset' in the same manner as the factory original electro-mechanical tick tock...

But, in a Performance Verification test, the presense of a quartz movement constitutes a full failure of the PV! So, you can expect a severe penalty resulting from a quartz movement...

Car's that vie for the Founders Award do NOT fail the Founder's Operation Check with quartz clocks. So, your choice of clock technology is complicated with much depending on what your restoration 'target' is.

If you intend to campaign the car for a Mark of Excellence Award, forget about the quarz clock and go with an original electro-mechanical unit. If you intend to campaign the car for other awards (Top Flight, Founders, Etc.), the use of a quartz movement will NOT wind up killing you...
