    69 hood hinge overspray/black-out help

I'm getting ready to shoot the under hood black-out on my 69 and was wondering if some of you could post some pics of original black-out spray at the hood hinge area?

I know this might be getting too picky but I figured that if I'm going to do it "right" I might as well do it the way it was.

Do it like the factory did and you'll be A-OK:

    (1) Mount the hood on the car.
    (2) Use a convenient straight-edge mask (like a piece of cardboard).
    (3) Hold it against the reinforcing lip on the bottom of the hood and shoot black-out as you move the mask around the outer circumference.

You'll wind up with a nice 'ragged/sloppy' parting line adjacent to the hood's reinforcing lip and you'll get very little black out on the forward lip of the hood due to the radiator core support being in place. Last, the moveable mask will stop against the fender in the area of the hood hinge and produce a nice 'ragged/sloppy' overspray as factory original in that area.

Where painters 'muck up' is by putting the hood upside down on a table, laying down nicely uniform masking tape that follows the EXACT contour of the hood's reinforcing lip and making a perfectly straight/crisp parting line between blackout and exterior paint + getting the blackout incorrect in the area around the hood hinges!

Plus, with the hood painted off-car, they tend to get a perfectly uniform pattern of exterior paint on the bottom, forward edge of the hood that's very much un-characteristic of a factory original quick & dirty paint job. Quite a few original cars have little/no exterior color in this area...

Thanks guys. I was going to use the "double tape method" for masking so that I would have a soft mask line but I see that that would be too nice!

I'll make up a cardboard mask of some sort now so that the end result looks like "crap".

So as I understand it, the exterior paint was applied first, then the engine black out. Would/Could there be exterior color beneath the black out paint in areas of the upper radiator support near the hinge?

            Absolutely there is.

              Greg,

              See my pics.
The yellow in some places is very obvious.

Hum, absolutes can boomarang... If the car was repainted by a prior owner or had crash repair work done on it, you might NOT find color beneath the blackout. So, ye olde qualifier 'if it's factory original' helps CYA.

Well I sort of thought that was the standard here, but if you want to allow for what Bubba has done then all bets are off.

Re: 69 hood hinge overspray/black-out help

Thanks. I was cleaning the old adhesive from the foam radiator to hood seal to replace with a new set. Cleaning the glue without removing black paint proved to be very tricky. When I found Donnybrooke Green beneath it I had to confirm the process steps. Luckily I was careful and only exposed some that is covered by the foam. The factory black out paint seems to be very easy to remove.
