Re: No, I wasn't asking about 1 vs 2-key cars

Now that I fully understand the question (gee, it was written in the English language...what's up with your reading, Jack!), the answer lies in NCRS literature.

According to the '73-77 Performance Verification Manual, 1973 was the last year that the ignition key operated the doors. From '74 and up, the ignition key only operated the ignition switch while the second key worked the doors, glovebox, alarm and spare tire lock.

Yes, Chevrolets reasoning was for security according to the 1974 Salesman Information Manual. Under Safety and Security Features on page 8.

Re: C3 door locks & ignition switch & keys

Gary - Jim had the answer. So, for 1965 and newer keys up to 1974 see below.

            1974

            "J" Ignition (Rectangular Head)

"K" Glove, Door, & Trunk (Oval Head)

            Additional info

Door & Ignition - Octagon head keys were used from 1965 up thru 1968 production and rectangular head starting with 1969 production.

Glove & Trunk - Round head i.e pair head keys were used from 1965 up thru 1968 production. The oval head key starting with 1969 production.
