"Cross Member" Crunching Time!!!

Gents,

After a successful engine install the cross member has me puzzled. The front mount lined right up for the two bolts; the transmission lined up to attach the cross member as well. However, the cross member bolt through holes are elongated for sideway adjustments. And that's the question; is there an adjustment for centering the drivetrain, or should I just bolt the cross member to the frame as it rests? The drive train looks plumb to me, but I need the experts to chime in please. BTW, the cross member has the slant toward the rear as outlined in the manual.

Yes they are Joe, but I didn't see in his post where it said he was working on any specific year. I guess in my old age I'm not able to read minds any more.

The mounting holes in the crossmember, bracket and bracket retainer should NOT be elongated side to side. Make life easy on yourself and get another crossmember that hasn't been modified and it will bolt right up. Good Luck. Rich

Have to disagree with you a bit. The crossmember holes (where it mounts to the frame) are slightly elongated from the factory , but moreso front to back than side to side. If any of those are elongated side to side, there are issues that you have duly noted, and your advice is sound.

You don't have to be a mind reader on this web site to answer a question for a specific year; that guessing is taken out of the equation for you from the members who designed this web site. See picture. This is the original cross member from a survivor vette. Yes, they are elongated front to back. That said, are there any "mandatory" adjustment procedures to follow, or just tighten the nuts where the transmission rests?

Your original post indicated sideways adjustment, which there is none of, since the holes are front-back elongated, not side to side.
Just put it in, and bolt it in. The elongation is to handle "standard factory deviation."

The engine and tarnsmission are lined up nicely to the human eye; the transmission tail shaft appears to be centered at the X portion of the frame, but the passenger side front mounting bracket sits back about 1/16th of an inch from the front lip of the rubber mount, whereas the driver side sits centered over the rubber mount; is this okay, or should I move the drivetrain so both ends of the front mount bracket sit straight over both rubber mounts? Thx in advance.
