    82 Wheel Caps loose

I have the Alum wheels with a plastic cap in the middle that is a tad loose. It snaps in, but seems ready to come off with a good bump. I saw some red "stuff" around the contact area. What can I use to secure the plastic cap to the wheel???

      Thanks, Dick,

I'll give it a try, may have half a tube in the box. And RTV does stand for Real Tough Vaseline, right?

      Thanks for the help.

Rich, I think you have a common problem. My original '77 centers became loose and popped off alot. I tried a bit of silicone and it seemed to help so far. I am seriously considering getting new center caps and not worrying about losing the originals.

I lost two on my '77 (15 years ago), too. Replacements showed no weak points ever since...

I have also had teeth that grip the wheel break on my original caps. I guess over time they weaken and lose surface material and wear down allowing them to no longer fit tightly against the wheel.

When we had our 78 and it exhibited this problem I solved it with small bits of the black 'dum-dum' putty between the cap and the wheel. Never had a problem with them loosening and the caps remained easily removed for wheel cleaning etc.

Thanks to all! I Guess I've been lucky so far. I'll get some RTV and pucky it up in a few weeks. It looks like it may be in the garage for the season right now. Just changed all the fluids, battery, and a new set of tires, so I will be ready for the spring.
